DisplaySearch, a division of NPD Group released their latest results on the LCD market. The numbers are interesting, to say the least. According to the report, LED-backlit screens take 100% market share in netbooks, with 4.2 million LED-backlit panels shipped, followed by a 26% market share in netbooks’ "big brother" – notebook segment [5.9 million shipped panels].

There is a difference in technology, though. Cheaper netbooks use wedge type LED backlit designs, while more expensive and effective slim type LED backlit dominate the notebook segment. According to panel manufacturers, wedge type will disappear from the netbook market as well. The wwo largest suppliers are HannStar, a leader in netbook segment and LG, the leader of notebooks.

If you look outside the mobile segment, LED backlit desktop monitors account for only 100,000 units, e.g. 0.5% of the complete market. When it comes to TV’s, the situation isn’t much better – Samsung is practically the only player in the market and their line-up of 40", 46" and 55" LCDs shipped in 400,000 units. Both desktop and TV markets have a long way to go, but the prognosis is good.

This report estimates that LED backlit LCD panel manufacturers will ship 104.5 million units in 2009, taking a 25% overall market share. The figures are backed by a radical growth in shipments even though the recession was showing its teeth during Q1’09. Figures are up 63% Quarter-on-Quarter, which is surprising – Q4 vs. Q1 is usually "no-contest." Year-on-Year growth rose to 780%, e.g. for every LED backlit panel sold in Q1’2008, 7.8 displays were shipped 12 months later.
