We received an e-mail from a well-known gaming industry analyst Scott Steinberg telling us about a multi-part documentary on the game industry. Naturally, we could not resist.

Under the umbrella of Game Theory TV, Scott gathered industry legends such as Trip Hawkins [founder of Electronic Arts], David Perry [founder of Shiny Entertainment], Will Wright [founder of Maxis] and many more. One must wonder, is Scott Steinberg now making his own opus magnus on digital world such as Mark Stephens’ Triumph of the Nerds: The Rise of Accidental Empires, but this time with game industry in mind.

They all speak of one sad tale about the lack of innovativeness in the game industry as this branch of entertainment went from the hands of enthusiasts into the hands of bean counters. However, lack of innovation caused by "slavery to the deadline", forced release time frames which dumbed down the quality of titles, causing weak sales which in return – resulted in a lot of layoffs in the industry. Naturally, bean counters remained, while developers were the ones getting the shaft.

The publishing industry clearly struggles to understand this most complex form of entertainment, and the dawn of digital distribution caught almost every publisher off-guard. You should spare 20 min of your time to see the first two parts. We for one, can’t wait to see Part III.
