Virage Logic is no more. Try to go to their website and you will immediately be redirected to Synopsys. Virage Logic provided semiconductor intellectual property [IP] for the design of complex integrated circuits. Synopsys also specializes in IP solutions for SoC designs. The company is also known for electronic design automation, supplying software, IP, and services in the semiconductor design and manufacturing industry. The two companies are blending their capabilities.

Virage Logic brings a broad range of products to the table. Their solutions address processors, interface IP, analog, mixed signal, SoC infrastructure IP, embedded SRAMs, non-volatile memories [NVM], embedded test and yield optimization solutions, logic libraries, and DDR memory controller subsystems.

Synopsys, itself, has a portfolio, DesignWare, that parallels that of the acquired company, and includes configurable CPU/DSP cores, and verification IP for such protocols as USB, PCI Express, DDR, SATA, Ethernet and AMBA [AMBA Spec PDF Download]. Additionally, Synopsys has System C transaction-level models to build virtual prototypes enabling fast pre-silicon development of software. Concurrent development of the hardware and software through virtual prototypes significantly reduces the product design cycle and speeds time to market. Both companies are select partners of GlobalFoundries and were in attendance at their sponsored event, GTC 2010, held this week in California.

The finalization of the acquisition of Virage Logic by Synopsys came just as Virage Logic was announcing a licensing agreement with Microelectronics Research Institute Progress [MRI Progress], a Russian SoC company. MRI Progress already has close to 400 successful chip designs under their belt. MRI Progress plans to use Virage Logic?s ARC Video 401V subsystem for digital TV applications. The Russian Federation is converting from analog to digital television. Moscow, St Petersburg and Kaliningrad will be the first to make the switch. Virage Logic, coincidentally, has a development team based in St. Petersburg.

Synopsys paid $12 cash per Virage Logic share. Virage Logic [Nasdaq: VIRL] shareholders, have been directed to Investor Relations at Synopsys [SNPS] on-line or by phone at 650-584-5000. Synopsis states: "We expect the impact of the acquisition on our non-GAAP earnings per share in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2010 to be roughly neutral."
