Electronic Arts’ division BioWare confirmed that Mass Effect 3, the sequel to the popular epic sci-fi role-playing series, will launch simultaneously on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC for the first time. Unfortunately, the game won’t arrive before the 2011 holiday season, a year from now.

In a statement accompanying the announcement the Californian megapublisher billed Mass Effect 3 as one of the most highly anticipated games of 2011 which will be "the pinnacle of Commander Shepard’s emotionally charged journey." Here’s the official game blurb:

Earth is burning. Striking from beyond known space, a race of terrifying machines have begun their destruction of the human race. As Commander Shepard, an Alliance Marine, your only hope for saving mankind is to rally the civilizations of the galaxy and launch one final mission to take back the Earth.

Unfortunately, the publisher was unwilling to share a more comprehensive outlook of the game at press time and all we got right now are various rumors and speculative reports published on a bunch of gaming blogs. In other words, pretty much nothing.

Mass Effect 2 is now available on the Xbox 360 and PC. The PlayStation 3 version is scheduled for arrival on January 18, 2011 in the US and January 21, 2011 in Europe. The PlayStation 3 demo of Mass Effect 2 will be available on PlayStation Network starting December 21, 2010 in the US and December 22, 2010 in Europe, Electronic Arts has confirmed.

It’ll be a long wait until the next holiday season, no doubt about it, but the official Mass Effect 3 teaser provided below suggests it’ll be well worth the wait. More information about Mass Effect is available at the official game site or the newly redesigned BioWare site.
