Top games are closing the technological gap between expensive movies nowadays. For proof, look no further than a fascinating facial capture system Rockstar Games developed for L.A. Noire.
The team has just released a new clip entitled ?The Technology Behind Performance? that offers a look at the technology powering incredible facial expressions of in-game characters.
The technology resets the bar of what’s possible in games and it really has to be seen to be fully appreciated. L.A. Noire, the upcoming crime thriller, utilizes a brand new facial capture technology they named MotionScan.
In short, it maps out human faces by combining video feeds from multiple angles, similar to the system director James Cameron developed for the Avatar movie. The team then maps out a 3D representation of the face that accurately represents not only the third dimension, but also lighting parameters and the actual face texture.
The end result is nothing short of phenomenal: Lifelike, Hollywood-quality facial expressions of in-game characters. See it for yourself – check out the astounding level of detail in a teaser trailer embedded below and then see how the team achieved the level of sophistication of facial expression that would have even James Cameron pay notice.
L.A. Noire is scheduled for release in Spring 2011 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. More information is available at the official game site.
