Kevin Rose, founder of social news aggregation site Digg, chimed in last week with the latest tidbits regarding a rumored iPad successor dubbed by the media the iPad 2. Rose has this information "on good authority" and quotes an unnamed source calling for a higher-resolution display on the device,

I have it on good authority that Apple will be announcing the iPad 2 in the next "3-4 weeks", possibly Tuesday February 1st. The iPad 2 will feature a retina display and front/back cameras.

If you’re thinking of buying an iPad, hold off for now.

His report came on the heels of recent leaks from Asia alleging Apple is in the process of lowering manufacturing output of the current model and ramping up for an April launch of iPad 2

Both Taiwanese trade publication Digitimes and news gathering organization Reuters named possible iPad 2 suppliers and quoted sources describing features such as slimmer design and special screen coating to reduce screen glare and finger smudges, as well as two cameras, a wide-band speaker and possibly a USB port and an SD card slot. The former publication also ran a story purporting a CDMA version of iPad 2 designed for the Verizon network, which makes sense considering the carrier could announce tomorrow the long-rumored Verizon iPhone.

At the CES show in Las Vegas, several iPad 2 cases and physical mockups (here and here) have been spotted, pictured earlier in this article. However, these prototype cases could as well be nothing more than scatter shots by accessories makers hoping to cash in on early availability of their products.
