Google yesterday updated its Google Googles app for Android and iPhone with amazing new features that enable the software to solve Sudoku puzzles for you and decipher print adverts. It’s real easy – just hover your device over the barcode or QR code, print advert or even a Sudoku puzzle and up pops related content. While barcode scanning doesn’t come as a surprise given dozens of dedicated Android and iOS apps, Sudoku solver is a startling feature. As you can see for yourself in the below video, you just take a clear picture of the entire Sudoku puzzle with the app and Google will tell you the correct solution.

Another head-scratching feature deals with print adverts in newspapers and magazines, depicted in the Android app screenshots on the right.

Tapping Google’s vast image database, the Googles app can recognize print adverts and return web search results about the product or brand.

Note that this feature only works for print ads appearing in major US magazines and newspapers from August 2010 onwards.

The image recognition app, Google Googles, is the search giant’s take on visual search.

It taps the power of the cloud to recognize common objects on users’ photos, such as products, famous landmarks and print text using optical character recognition algorithms.

Eager to take a plunge? Download Google Goggles 1.3 from Android Market or update the free Google Mobile App software for your iPhone to version 1.3.
