The Verizon iPhone, just like any CDMA-only handset, is unable to simultaneously transfer voice and data due to technological limitations of the CDMA radio technology. However, as Verizon Wireless rolls out its fourth-generation Long Term Evolution (4G LTE) network, this could become a thing of the past.
And if an internal slide leaked to AndroidCentral is to be believed, the HTC ThunderBolt – heading soon to the Verizon network as part of their 4G LTE lineup of devices – will be the first smartphone to allow simultaneous voice and data on the America’s most reliable network.
In fact, the carrier in a Q&A session at the CES show confirmed that some 4G phones hitting their network will allow for simultaneous voice and data.
These two tidbits should give naysayers enough hard evidence that Verizon’s 4G LTE network will in fact allow simultaneous voice and data on supported devices. That shouldn’t come as a surprise.
LTE radio technology was designed to allow greater data speeds than today’s cellular networks. Even though LTE doesn’t support traditional voice calls, we know voice can be digitized and transferred in small data blocks akin to VoIP services like Skype.
The GSMA body last year unveiled such an initiative dubbed VoLTE (as in Voice over LTE) aimed at standardizing a 100 percent IP-based voice communication over LTE networks. Alternatively, the HTC ThunderBolt may handle voice communication separately of data by tapping the CDMA network for voice while you at the same time surf the web and check your email via LTE, courtesy of a Gobi-enabled LTE modem that the handset rocks.
This also means the phone would not allow simultaneous voice (via CDMA) and data (via LTE) when outside LTE coverage because it’d fall back to the rusty old CDMA.
HTC ThunderBolt, coming soon on the Verizon network, is a huge 4.3-inch Android smartphone with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, an eight-megapixel camera with HD video recording and Dolby surround sound. It runs HTC Sense 2.0 user interface and supports Skype mobile with video and wireless DLNA capability.
