In order to address the storage needs of mobile users, Seagate introduced GoFlex Satellite, a hard drive casing that combines a built-in battery that offers 25 hours of standby time (five hours of operation), Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n), USB 3.0 and a 5,400 rpm Momentus notebook hard drive with 500GB capacity.
Seagate GoFlex Satellite – 500GB Momentus Drive meets 5hr of Battery life
GoFlex Satellite charges the battery while connected to the USB port and comes with PC and Mac Software. It is more than obvious that this device targets the owners of tablets and smartphones that need data on the go, but we also have couple of other case scenarios in mind. In any case, to us this is a great way to quickly download / upload data from your mobile device while keeping it wireless free for at least five hours.
Seagate’s VP and GM of Retail Group, Mr. Patrick Connolly went on to say that "No longer will a consumer feel as though it is a compromise to purchase a lower capacity tablet or iPad. With GoFlex Satellite, people will be able to carry their entire media library with them without the need for wires or the web at a fraction of the cost of adding 3G or purchasing or a higher capacity tablet."
In our opinion, that attitude is needed due to somewhat high price of $199.99 for 500GB of storage, currently available for pre-order on Amazon and Best Buy. True, the company could not go much lower due to prices and availability of high-capacity batteries.
All in all, an interesting concept for growing mobile computing market: netbooks, tablets, smartphones.
