Steve Appleton, Chairman and CEO of memory chip vendor Micron Technology Inc, died in the crash of an experimental Lancair aircraft he was piloting at Boise Airport this morning, the company said.

"Our hearts go out to his wife, Dalynn, his children and his family during this tragic time," Boise-based Micron said in the statement. "Steve?s passion and energy left an indelible mark on Micron, the Idaho community and the technology industry at large."

Appleton was an active participant in adventure sports. According to Wikipedia: "His hobbies include scuba diving, surfing, wakeboarding, motorcycles and more recently off road car racing," the site reports. "His aviation background includes multiple ratings and professional performances at air shows in both propeller- and jet-powered aircraft. He also has a Black Belt in Taekwondo."

Appleton, legendary for his guiding Micron through the minefields of semiconductor memory manufacturing was in the midst of a turnaround effort at Micron, deleveraging the company?s dependence on DRAM by expanding into a broader manufacturing base supplying devices into mobile-phones, tablet computers and other high mobility devices. Micron is the last producer of memory devices outside of Asia.

Born and raised in the Los Angeles area, Appleton attended Boise State University and joined Micron shortly after graduation in 1983. He rose through the ranks of the organization to become President and COO in 1991 and then taking the position of CEO in 1994.

Trading in Micron shares on the NYSE had recently been halted for news. There is no indication yet on when the stock will resume trading.
