Razer in partnership with Valve has announced that their Hydra motion gaming controller will be enabled to support over 250 games on steam, thanks to their work with Valve.
The biggest announcements today, include the Razer Hydra’s compatibility with Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 2 as well as Half-Life 2. These FPS games have such a huge following and so much replay value to many that we believe that a lot of people will enjoy replaying these games with the Razer Hydra by Sixense. In addition to past titles, Valve has also announced that they will be supporting the Hydra in future titles as well, including Counter-Strike: Global Offensive as well as DoTA 2, both games are due out this year.
As if that weren’t enough, Valve also announced that the Hydra motion FPS controller would be enabled for use within the steam interface so that users don’t have to switch to a keyboard when trying to navigate menus. This will enable a much more fluid gaming experience for users who like to use the Hydra controller but don’t want to have to break out a keyboard and mouse for minor things. Because of this heavy integration into Valve’s products, the Razer Hydra was capable of being enabled in 250 steam titles, with likely many more to come.
This announcement comes on the heels of rumors that Valve will be announcing an open-source hardware platform which will play Steam titles and basically operate on its own system. This rumor, to us, initially sounded a bit far-fetched but upon further analysis makes much more sense especially considering today’s announcement. The reason for this is because Gabe Newell has been an outspoken proponent of wearable computing and has been trying to get wearable computing and physical user input integrated into games. As such, getting the Razer Hydra integrated into Steam as well as Steam titles only further cements the fact that Gabe and Valve are slowly making their vision come true. So, it appears that today’s joint announcement between Valve and Razer actually puts more fuel on the fire of the Steam Console rumor, admittedly for good reason.
