MAINGEAR is a well known manufacturer of premium gaming machines with innovative cooling and audio/video solutions built inside their in-house developed custom chassis. Not to be outdone, the company is now spreading from the gaming and governmental world into – 4K video production.

MAINGEAR’s Quantum SHIFT 4K is a new workstation dedicated to the demands of professionals who live and breathe 4K video (also known as 2160p, Quad HD, 4096×2160 and 3840×2160 resolutions). This system is a result of MAINGEAR expertise combined with the four years of experience of living and breathing the 4K video production here at the BSN Video Production business unit.

The Quantum SHIFT 4K combines the engineering brilliance of SHIFT case and tweaked hardware and software procedures by the MAINGEAR crew, and the real world demands of seasoned video professionals who demand that hardware that “delivers the goods” instead of pointlessly overspeccing the parts which in the end, do not help to increase the productivity.

The system is based on dual liquid-cooled Intel Xeon E5-2600 (or better) processor with up to 16 cores and 32 threads, up to 128GB of DDR3 memory and dedicated hardware for Blackmagic’s DaVinci Resolve which is becoming a defacto standard in color grading.

The system configuration is quite flexible and targets the workflow demands of professionals. You can install up to two Quadro 4000, 5000 or 6000 boards equipped with 4K panel connectors (DisplayPort), RED Rocket card (one in preliminary configuration) and a Blackmagic DeckLink 4K card. Do note that MAINGEAR does not charge a premium for offering the board – prices for Rocket or DeckLink 4K cards are identical to the ones on the manufacturer websites. In our discussions with Wallace Santos, CEO and Chris Morley, CTO, we were assured that MAINGEAR wants to do their very best in satisfying the demanding customer rather than nicking and diming on each step of the way.

For example, for a coloring system, you can combine two Quadro 4000 boards with a RED Rocket and DeckLink board or combine two Quadro 4000 boards with two RED Rocket boards. In any case, your requirements will be catered to, regardless of your duties being VFX, Color, post etc.

Furthermore, MAINGEAR decided to go for Apple’s jugular and offer a 10% discount for Apple Mac users switching to MAINGEAR. Thus, if you are sick and tired of outdated hardware without any Blu-ray support (choose between Reader or Burner), if your heavily paid Final Cut Pro is being upgraded to iMovie Pro, pardon, Final Cut X and if you are really agitated by the last update for Color causing complete system freezes on a $10,000+ Mac Pro, MAINGEAR wants you to give them a chance.

The choice is up to you, but unlike other systems, in creation of this system – real video professionals were involved. Stability and configurability are the paramount of Quantum SHIFT 4K.
