Software development continues with the promise of a new installment in the Final Fantasy series to join the already more than 11,000 titles that exist for the popular console.

Sony had released the original PlayStation in 1995 with the simplistic game Frogger. In 2000, along came PlayStation 2 (PS2). Three of the original PS2 launch models were only sold in Japan. Shortly after, versions were released in Europe and North America. Soon after Sony’s newest entry into the game arena, an earlier competitor, Sega Dreamcast, ceased production. However, Microsoft Xbox, and Nintendo GameCube came on the market the next year to give Sony a run for its money

Still the PS2 held its own, obtaining temporary exclusive rights to upcoming games including the Grand Theft Auto series. During its lifetime, PS2 unit sales worldwide reached 153.19 million as of March, 2011. More than a billion and a half games were sold with more on the way. A recent August 2012 release is Shinobi, a legendary ninja who battles demons in postapocalyptic Tokyo . This action game came out with a Mature rating due to violence, blood and gore, too indicative of our times.

The PS2 is credited with boasting the widespread use of DVD’s due to its built in drive. Sony’s machine also spawned a quirky story of Dan Holmes of Banbury, Oxfordshire, England. As a tribute to his love of the PS2, just two years after its introduction, Mr. Holmes who had spent upwards of $11,350 into day’s USD for games for his gaming addiction, officially changed his name to Mr. PlayStation 2.

The PS2 has seen several internal and external revisions. The two major model designs feature the original fat case and the slimline. A major enhancement came in 2010, when a television incorporating a PS2 was released. Users can play select games over the Internet, using a broadband internet connection and a PlayStation 2 Network Adaptor. There are many accessories for musical games: microphones, guitar and drum controllers. The PlayStation 2 can natively output video.
