Qualcomm [NASDAQ:QCOM] has partnered up with Unity Technologies, makers of the popular mobile game engine Unity Engine to optimize for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon line of processors. This marks a huge move for Qualcomm in the realm of mobile gaming, where they have provided things like the Snapdragon SDK for developers and hosted their own developer conferences. However, this is probably the single biggest step for Qualcomm in terms of mobile gaming considering the overall size and power that Unity’s engine has in the mobile gaming industry.

Currently, Unity’s Engine sports an impressive number of 1.5 million developers that are using their engine. Admittedly, this does not translate into 1.5 million games, but Unity is without a doubt one of the biggest game engines out there for mobile, if not the biggest. As you can see from the list of games on Unity’s website, there’s no shortage of mobile games using Unity’s engine.

The reason why Unity’s optimizations in their developer toolkit is such a good fit with Qualcomm is because Unity actually support multiple platforms including Android, Windows Phone 8, iOS, PC, MAC, Xbox and PS3. This will not only improve the performance of current hardware using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips, but it could also be used in future consoles or TVs that utilize Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips as well.

Qualcomm has been spending quite a bit of time trying to break into the game market and understand how to properly approach it. They even developed their own in-house game studio to help create games for Snapdragon and to simultaneously help developers to understand how to develop better for Snapdragon. By building themselves into one of the most ubiquitous game engines for mobile, Qualcomm has finally found a place for themselves in the game industry. Now, we just have to see how much these optimizations affect future performance in new games compared to no optimizations as well as how those optimizations affect battery life.

Overall, this is a significant announcement coming out of Qualcomm, and we have to see how this will develop in the coming months to see how significant these optimizations are for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips and Adreno GPUs inside of them. This also helps to fight Nvidia’s efforts with the TegraZone, which Qualcomm attempted to combat with their own version called Snapdragon Game Command but ultimately failed. Nvidia’s TegraZone has shipped in millions of phones and we have a feeling that Qualcomm’s optimizations for Unity may have an even greater impact once implemented in newer games, we have yet to see what these optimizations are for exactly. Nevertheless, the sheer fact that Unity is going to now be optimized for Snapdragon is a big win for the company over their competitors.
