Many people have been wondering, where is the promised AMD Mantle patch for EA and DICE’s Battlefield 4? Well, considering that we were told that it would be arriving in the end of December and today is the 30th, a lot of people have been wondering what’s going on. Well, its comes as no surprise now that DICE has announced that they will be delaying the Mantle patch of BF4 until January in order to deliver a better experience. AMD’s statement regarding the delay reads,

"After much consideration, the decision was made to delay the Mantle patch for Battlefield 4. AMD continues to support DICE on the public introduction of Mantle, and we are tremendously excited about the coming release for Battlefield 4! We are now targeting a January release and will have more information to share in the New Year."

This isn’t really a surprising development because when I originally heard the December date I was already skeptical as it seemed a very ambitious target. While I commend Johan and his team for their ambition, the problem is that Battlefield 4 did not really launch as a bug-free title. As a result, EA has heard a lot of complaints from gamers and EA investors, whom have recently filed lawsuits against EA management. As such, I wouldn’t be surprised if EA management took action and allocated some of the team dedicated to the Mantle update to fixing the core game itself. I believe that the temporary shifting of resources coupled with the already thin nature of DICE’s staff due to Frostbite being the default engine for all EA games is the reason for the Mantle delay.

I’m not really mad or even really surprised. I don’t think we’ll really see much of a delay on the Mantle update, but I do think that a lot of people are eager to see the differences. For now, we’ll just have to settle with continued bugfixes of the game itself, which anyone who has played the game knows are desperately needed.
