15K.6 drives instead of SSDs by: Michael A. McKenney on 10/30/2009
I will probably upgrade from 10K.6 2.5" Savvio SAS to 3.5" 15K.6 SAS drives. SSDs are very interesting. For now, 15K.6 will be a better option, I can get 146GB 15K.6 for $180 each at CDW.

Yes the issue is one of coming up with a standard for the write tables (write cycle issue) and also bringing the price down.

once a set standard is in place then you will know if you are getting a working solution or not.

The information I have says that Seagate and LSI are working on this standard but it is taking longer than expected. I do know this issue is the reason for the delay of Seagate's SSDs.

I only hope that they come up with something soon.

While SSD’s maybe a popular item among tech enthusiast for epeen measuring and bragging rights of having the latest electronics gizmo, I don’t see SSDs as a viable replacement for my platter based HDD... Until (1) The flash memory write cycle issue is resolved (2) price is comparable to platter drives of same size. Until then it’s just another boring novelty item. Platter drives are cheap and reliable and can be written to repeatedly.
