So, AMD processors would be even more power hungry without SOI? by: Anonymous on 10/9/2009
Phenom II processors are already more power hungry than what Intel offers, both in idle and load. So, if AMD woudn't use SOI, their processors would require even more power? That means they are very inefficient. Or am I missing something? Is Intel using similar technology for power savings?

The thing against using SOI was never about performance, it was about cost. It is not hard to use SOI for CPUs, because CPUs have traditionally commanded a high ASP greater than $100 a piece minimum.

Going SOI for ARM is probably not a good idea, even with the "40%" power savings because ASP for ARM processor is what? 20 dollars a piece?

Global Foundry can brag about their SOI process all they want. With Hector Ruiz as the chairman of the board of directors. There is only one result coming out of that.
