You can get mugged and pick pocketed anywhere in the world. This is why when I travel I do the following.

I make two copies of the front and back of each credit card. One for the safe in the room and one at home. If they are stolen, I can easily call and report it.

I make a two copies of my passport for the same reason above. I also have the phone numbers for the US embassies in each country I visit.

I take travelers checks and only cash out enough for a few days. I leave them in the hotel safe.
