Gay looking character as seen by many or at least on the subject loudest MMO players is a male guy who looks like a pretty woman. It has nothing to do with comparing such look with gays in real life or bringing in that hypocrisy about ugly women stuff.

The point I was trying to make was that some judge Asian games by this standard and that Aion with their customization slightly bypasses this issue.

My guy is not a western or manly design nor did I imply that he is. He is the perfect example of how cool anime characters can look if you stay away from beefcakes and metrosexuals.

I love anime myself but anime is also Berserk, Ninja Scroll and Vampire Hunter D. People who love girly men do not have sole rights on it and Aion perfectly reflects this.

I stopped considering your impressions reliable after reading your introduction. Most Korean MMO's don't fail. I'm not sure what your definition of failure is exactly. In the past Korean MMO's have done very well for themselves, and when they have been brough to North America they have acquired a loyal following.

Also, the moment you refer to characters looking "too gay" is also where it is impossible to take you seriously. What does too gay look like exactly? I assume you mean attractive. An ugly man does not equate to straight and manly, it is all in your head. You certainly would never say this about female characters, in fact, the only time a guy would speak up about the look of female characters in games is if they are not attractive enough. This is a double standard and is quite foolish. I find it best not to show off your insecurities in a simple game review. There are many examples of "ugly asian characters" in Korean games, and in Asian art style in general. You managed to design a character that equates to an Asmodian version of Heihachi Mishima from Tekken, how manly and "Western" of you!

So far I like what I see. I think it's a good mix of a lot of games. It has the "rest" ability which is something like EQ's sit your butt down to regen mana/health.

IT has "private stores" which you can sell your goods if you're too cheap to put them int he ah or want to park it in a lvl apropriate zone to sell your wares. But it also has a wow like auction house for those who don't want to bother.

Questing is broken up into two types, are reasonably simple. Drop rates for things (so far) seem good (read: I wont' be spending 24 hours strait under water waiting for a quest drop(EQ) or killing 9,000 things for a single drop (wow) just to start over because I need 11 more of the stupid items.

The graphics are gorgeous. I like the fact that men look like OMG OMG OMG MEN! (unless you don't want them too). The character customization is truly awesome (as you said). The mobs are reasonably unique, and the setting gorgeous.

I also haven't seen the PLETHERA of huge bugs. The lag has been fixed, and my armor actually works (unlike when AOC launched and running around nekkid was just as useful at lvl 1 as it was at level 75). ( Yahtzee says it pretty well @ http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/138-Age-of-Conan ). and i WANTED To like AOC. But seriously failsauce. WAR was TOOO much pvp, and while funny just couldn't hold my interest. And really I'm sick of wow. GRIND GRIND GRIND GRIND. The original reasons I liked it (soloability and much easier leveling) have long since dried up since just about everyone offers that, and it ends up being a second job not a game.

Here's me also hoping it doesn't fail.

Sadly today every MMO is a grindfest so I do not see what makes Korean ones any worse than the rest.

I never said that WAR is a decent game and both as gamer and someone who loves the tabletop game consider it a great failure but better than those two it certainly is.

The thing why I think it is slightly better than WoW and AoC is that it puts the player into action from first level to max. Warhammer Online at least has the feeling of actual medieval war along with killing peasants and taking over enemy keeps.

In WoW you are killing boars until you are high enough to do a limited palette of boring scenarios and AoC is just a meaningless and uninteresting gankfest.Both of those games could have been so much more.

In the beginning, before all the "patches and fixes" WAR was a promising game but I certainly hope Aion does not follow in its path.

You lost me as soon as you said WAR was just "slightly" better than WoW or AoC.

WAR is better than nothing...and if that is what you think is a decent game, I can easily mark Aion off my list due to your recommendation.

One less MMO in my stable.

I bought the collector digital edition of AionSunday, downloaded it and was able to play to lvl 8 as a cleric before the closed beta came to conclusion. Having played EQ1,EQ2,AOC,War and Lineage this game feels very likable and unique. The graphics are beautiful and the game mechanics so far experienced are error free. I am looking forward to the open beta and the full release in September to try out the p.v.p options.

I like your article, you really point out some valid points. Ive been playing Aion since it opened and it is unmistakably Korean but with a real Western twist. I cannot stand Western PVE focused games with all the competition leeched out for "fairness" and "family gaming". I plan on playing Aion for a bit.
