Racetrack by: Sean Kalinich on 9/21/2009
I looked into it a little farther and both memristor and racetrack have higher densities.

The information on 1GB fitting into a square CM is in the Wiki article you linked also.

"HP prototyped a crossbar latch memory using the devices that can fit 100 gigabits in a square centimeter"

I was wrong on the size though it is 100 Gb and not 1Gb like I mentioned

Although your right about HP working on memristors.

I think your thinking of racetrack memory Sean. Which uses a vertical construction technique to cram a lot more data into the space.
Memristor by: Sean Kalinich on 9/19/2009
An oversight on my part. there is really so much that is going on in chip and electronic design that I only covered the items that I have direct information on. Also my understanding is that Memristors are not such much as memory resistors as more of a crossbar. Currently (to the best of my knowledge) the only people that have built one for general computing was HP and they are still at 1/10th DRAM speed. Their benefit currently is capacity with roughly 1Gb of data fitting into a square CM.

They are an interesting development though.

A memristor is a transistor that is also able to hold it's memory without a constant electric current. So if you have a computer with memristor RAM, you could shut it down, and turn it back on instantly. Less than a second boot time.
How could you? by: Anonymous on 9/19/2009
Huh? The memristor? -.-

How could you fail to mention the impact of the memristor on electronics design?
