AMD Engineers are Awesome! by: Anonymous on 10/20/2010
So let's see if I got this straight: AMD GPU's offer way smaller die sizes yet comparable performance to bloated Nvidia chips. Way to go AMD Engineers!

Theo, Thanks for the professional and detailed response to my criticism. I should have known up front that my fears were unfounded. It goes a long way to bolster my confidence in what I read here!

What will happen when GF goes bye bye? by: Anonymous on 10/20/2010
I have a problem with global foundries departing entirely from AMD. What will happen when AMD starts to get pushed around and starts paying for their wafers?

GF-ARM, GF-Qualcomm, GF-STMicro, GF-NVDA all want their piece of silicon pie. Given that AMD has problems in achieving rates NVDA gets at TSMC, who is to say same thing wound't happen when global foundries end all on their own?

At the end of the day cash is king.

From what I can gather from the latest info, both the cpu and gpu sides are doing "ok" and AMD is making money, and improving their situation, the problem is that their stake in global foundries is dragging them back into the red each quarter :(

wow, just wow. Thanks for honesty Theo. And its 255mm2. 8-)
Die Size... by: Theo Valich on 10/19/2010
The die size number was featured in a report received from Wedbush Morgan, backed by several sources. It looks like either they were wrong or the slide contained misleading information, like the slides which switched Barts Pro and XT.

Hi Anonymous,

First of all, BSN* was banned from attending the briefing by AMD PR, most notably by Chris Hook and Dave Ereskine. They executed an order that came from a higher rank following our un-sanctioned review of Magny-Cours, which again - was unbiased.

Some companies do not like that we do our job honestly and on merit. Intel issued a profit warning, but came on top. AMD issued a warning and could not compensate for weak results of the Opteron business unit.

We are appreciative that AMD screwed up Maranello platform and that BSN* actually earned money on engineering/fixing the BIOS issues for a motherboard manufacturer.

The facts of the matter with this article stand at as is - AMD has higher profit per die. However, it is the rest of the business where AMD loses money and in the end, scores a loss in a quarter in which a company took 20% of discrete graphics share.

Again, this story is facts. AMD per die is more efficient, both power and money wise than NVIDIA. Period. However, NVIDIA earns more money due to Microsoft-like status in Quadro vs. FirePro [Professional GPU], Tesla business [according to our sources, NVIDIA sells 23 Tesla boards to one FireStream] and so on and so forth.

We will report the truth and won't spin the numbers. Our statistics show that our 11% of our readers are from Silicon Valley, 7% come from Manhattan, 6% come from LA.

45% of our readers have college degree. 42% has some sort of degree. 20% of our readers earn more than $100,000. 25% of our readers are women.

Thus, I believe our readers are very intelligent and are able to comprehend the numbers given here without bias or misunderstanding.

AMD states the die size of Barts is 255mm2.

You didn't finish stating the obvious conclusion:

At 255mm2 vs. 367mm2 for the same performance, AMD CRUSHES Nvidia.

Slanted View, Theo? by: Anonymous on 10/19/2010
Here's how I see it. AMD's new generation only competes with nVidia's second level part. AMD is bleeding money, while nVidia is posting solid profits. Why all the negativity towards nVidia here? It seems to me like they're executing and AMD needs to stop living with the mistakes Ruiz made and sell off the graphics division.
