The problem is not only that a non-UEFI BIOS won't be able to boot from it, but also... by: Anonymous on 10/19/2010
...that, if such a harddisk is plugged into the mainboard's SATA jack, the AHCI BIOS extensions up until 2009 or so will *HANG* while detecting such a 3TB or 2.5TB drive.

There are three remedies for that particular problem:

- unplug the drive, reboot the PC and disable AHCI (i.e. switch the SATA ports to IDE mode), then plug the drive back in and reboot once more

OR

- reflash the BIOS with a BIOS version that (hopefully) fixes the AHCI BIOS bug

OR

- use the RocketRAID controller that WD kindly provides. Well, I shouldn't say "kindly", but "cleverly", since otherwise they would get so many returns that the 3TB disk wouldn't turn a profit for them, but instead a loss. Returns are very costly for a manufacturer.
