So how did they get FCC ok when ATT and Sprint got denied a similar thing in the 90s?

Most people seem to forget about the upload part. Most of the consumer-level connections have crappy upload speeds. Upload speed is now very important, as people want to share more. So while the increase in download speed is negligible, the increase in upload speed won't be missed.

A fast internet connection isn't really that expensive, or at least it shouldn't be. You'd be surprised how much your provider is really ripping you off! And keep in mind that they plan on deploying this for 50.000 to 500.000 people, that's just 0.16% of the US population.

On the other hand, I think it has a very good chance of being useless for the time being. You see, the "server willing" part is very important, because most servers aren't very fast. I have a 100Mbps connection at home and apart from the fact that I can get nVidia's drivers in a couple of seconds, there's really not much to it. Youtube is sometimes slow, my email doesn't load any faster, and most downloads are about the same as 20Mbps. There is however one thing that it's particularly good at: torrents. Downloading from 50 people at once is a thrill, because no matter how slow they are, you will still get that HD movie in a couple of minutes. Then again, downloading movies is illegal!

So, all in all, this is like an exotic sports car. Everyone wants one even though using it's full power is not allowed.
Not Gonna Happen by: Anonymous on 2/10/2010
Unless Google plans on buying Comcast, or some other major network provider, they're just wasting thier time. Fact is, unless Google is offering lower price and better perfromance people simply aren't gonna switch network providers. Don't blame Obama
