Activision Allows COD: Black Ops Dedicated Servers but There’s a Catch

Boycott gameservers.com

Clearly the big grains at Activision are NOT going to change their minds about this – and let’s face it, they have no financial reason to. As was demonstrated by the LACK of a real boycott of MW2, people ARE going to buy the game. They ARE also going to rent servers from gameservers.com – because they have to. HOWEVER this exclusive deal is the weak link. Fine, gameservers.com we have to rent our CoD7 server from you? But do we have to rent our OTHER server from you? No frackin way. So, since a boycott of Activision is not really going to happen; boycott gameservers.com – move EVERY OTHER SERVER you rent from them to ANY other competitor. I think that that will make ANY company think twice about being “…extremely excited about [such an] unprecedented relationship with Activision…” in future.

Does not look as bad as this article makes it sound. Not as cool as COD4 but better than Bad Company two and a heck of a lot better than MW2 IMHO.
Modded servers will still be avail it says. Read folks read...

As another Anon user said, read: http://www.callofduty.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=270441&sid=v1l9mrubus0re9fkhqtgru64b4
After reading this the server files will not be accessible to admins but I assume Black Ops will have some kind of middle-man admin system that let's you kick, and customise settings and variables in a way that then alters the server files without going into the files themselves.
Of course this means they can choose which things you can alter and by how much.
Just speculation but sounds about right to me.

So where was the outrage when BC2 did the EXACT SAME THING (and said no mod tools too!)?
Modding...

There's a good chance that modding may occur, but that's only on unranked servers... but from what I've heard there is no access to server files. So there's a good chance that you may have to get permission from activision and game servers to run a mod.
That's unconfirmed. They haven't talked much about mods. Lets remember, Activision likes games to die out after a few years so they can sell the new one. No mods means no longevity for a game like say... half life, where each one has spawned some awesome mods.
Again the same cheaptreack

Dear Sirs of Activion
I wish you bankrupt i go try to help in that, with not buying the game. I was thinking change to Gameserver.com provider to keep COD4 and COD7 on same provider, but not anymore. I hate dirty alliances. No one is able to dethrone COD4 without dedicated server!
Long live the King long live COD4.

Are you telling me I can't buy a unranked server from gameservers.com and mod it with different server settings, for example exclude noobtoobing if possible?
When I heard dedicated servers I was over the moon but after hearing this it's kinda made me sceptical of what's to come.
You wanna pay for a unranked 24 slot no VoIP included 12 month package, it's gonna be $245, and you're saying you can't mod it, change server settings? Please tell me I'm understanding this wrong.
Also, I'm guessing you can't buy ranked servers and mod their settings as that would mess the rank system up so unranked will give admin the most freedom to make that server their own?

Activision Allows COD: Black Ops Dedicated Servers but There’s a Catch
There isnt a catch, There are no dedicated servers! Using an exclusive host running shared servers on a dedicated box does not constitute dedicated server support! Activision has changed their definition of dedicated servers to suite the lies they have been feeding us for months. Big surprize...And as usual everyone will run out and buy the game. Keep in mind when doing so that you are part of the problem. Supporting any company that is deceptive and lacks integrity only shows them that they can do anything they want and still see big revenues. I for one will not be buying this game.

Console Mentality, Greed, and TOTAL CONTROL is ruining PC gaming..
We PC gamers MUST find a way to fight back and stop this growing trend before there is no longer any decent games left.
I for one, WAS excited at the prospect of returning to the CoD franchise, but I WILL NOT after hearing this madness. I want to run MY own server on MY boxes, using MY network, in MY datacenters.
One day they will learn.. with a little help from us.

I must say, I have been to a lot of providers..seen a lot of things that I didn't agree with that providers did to the customers, But I always trusted the game, And that I could run the gameserver I rented the way I want to, And pick who I rented from. Now days we cant trust the game, The anti cheat system they put on it, And now the provider you choose(and yes I am a provider). And now the loyal customers we had for years that came from gameservers and other providers, Already dropped their servers that they had for years to preorder a server we now cant host and they have to go back to somewhere they felt the service and customer support was unsatisfactory, So we can boycott and do this and do that, But at the end of the day they just don't listen to us(yes I'm a true gamer).
I was asked a question once and I asked it in return
would you spend 1 million to make 30 million
out of a pole 87 percent said no
And that is todays market people for business
So we have to look at that before we can fix anything in the gaming market, As I bet most of them in it don't play games on PC or understand it at all.
If they own a Xbox or PS3 then they have no idea how a clans Website servers and voice Coms operate and the friendly environment surronding it.

You know Bad Company 2 did the exact same thing. Everyone stoped caring about the server issue after a week and continued to say that BC2 was the "proper pc modern warfare game". Face it no one will care by the time this comes out.

Ok great, its $15/month for a full ( 18 player -_- ) ranked Black Ops server, wonderful. But what the HELL are we suppose to do when all of their boxes are overloaded with servers? If Bad Company 2 was able to pull off almost 7,000 servers then Black Ops ( with the hype and affordable price ) can easily hit 10k servers. This means when I send a ticket it in to Gameservers for any kind of complaint, it would take weeks to have them follow up on it. If that isn't enough, stacking 10,000 servers in addition to what they already have to host is RIDICULOUS!
Disappointed

How about the countries without gameservers.com? This is a lag fest activision you dumb money making pricks. Look at Valve. They make games and make dedicated server clients for everyone.
Lets open ourselves to lawsuits

So how about a free market and fair play? Giving a company a monopoly in hosting sounds like violating anti-trust laws to me. If it was activition renting out the servers its one thing... but lol.

What a half-assed way to address the issues created by MW2 not having dedicated servers. This is a complete joke.
Gameservers isn't a bad company, but when all their servers become stacked with Black Ops games running at the same time, the paying customers can expect their servers to crash consistantly unless GS is significantly upgrading their systems to handle the rush of rentals that this deal is going to bring.
FU Activision.

Activi$ion

The reason for this is so they can scam more money from us. You see by the community buying up servers from whoever they want, Activi$ion doesn't get any money from that. So they force us to 'exclusive' servers, which they can scab a percentage of money from each sale.
Rediculous and killing the modding community and clans.

MW2....didn't we learn?
Want to have the game be popular...let people have dedicated servers.
Want to monopolize the market.....keep it. You lose...and we play other games that we can have our own servers on.
I was pumped up to buy this game...now, not really. I may influence others not to buy it as well.
Make and sell the game, and let us have some freedom with it. Otherwise, sit in your offices telling yourself that your company isn't doing well b/c of the economy. Basically you fail if you don't let the consumer have dedicated servers.
Failsauce...end result.

What's the point of having dedicated servers if the worst GSP (Performance wise) is hosting them.

As a modder of CoD4, this is extremely disappointing to here, but I made sure not to keep my hopes up as I had a gut feeling this would happen.
So I'd just like to say, thanks everyone for playing our mods in CoD4, and thanks Activi$ion for making another stupid choice.
Followers of Obscurity, HitLoc, MTX and Hide n Seek mods, I urge you all to boycott this ruined product and stick to what you all love...a fully customisable, highly enjoyable COD4. Long live modding!
