NVIDIA Partners claim GT200 still in Mass Production

News of the demise of the GTX 260, 275 and 285 due to shortage might be overrated - or actually limited to a specific market from where rumors arrive. Today I read this information and thought about the reasons for this to be happening. The first was that it could be a premature end of life cycle [EOL]. The next was that NVIDIA might be pulling out all the stops to get Fermi supplies very high to meet any demands that could happen over the holidays. The third was that it was again incorrect information.

We took the time to contact a few NVIDIA partners and ask them publicly and also to check with our sources to see if there is any truth to the rumor. We were surprised that we received a reply in a little less than five minutes after we sent the e-mails. Across the board, from both the public and the inside sources they all claim the rumor is untrue.

They all say that the GT200 parts are in mass production, with internal refreshes coming up soon from a few of them. This would seem to be the opposite of a part famine. We are continuing to reach out to our sources to see if we can find the source of the rumor and if there is any chance of there being truth behind this.

One possibility that we stumbled upon is that this is a regional issue. When we checked we did find that some EU partners were claiming that they were not getting any allocation due to all of the available parts getting earmarked for the US. This was not true with all of the partners we talked to just a couple. All of the US Partners we talked to said they did not have any allocation issues as of this writing.

At the time of this writing we have not contacted nVidia about this as you can pretty much guess their answer. Once we have heard back from all of our sources on this we will take the time to talk to them about it and see what they have to say. Until then hang tight, you might still be able to get a GTX 2xx card for a while yet.

Not a confirmation by: Sean Kalinich on 10/14/2009
We have four board partners stating the exact opposite.

Even the author says;

"If you look carefully, neither of these statements directly supports or refutes the two articles above. NVIDIA is very clever."

Again speaking with board partners in the US they are not having any shortage issues. And none of them have any plans to discontinue the GT200b products.

Expect EOL to hit next year not this one.

It is more about weeding out the FUD that is flying around. I do not like the new trend in the way corporate PR firms are working (ALL PR Firms) they are starting to whisper misleading information at best.

I have always worked to counter FUD no mater who started it, be it NV, AMD, Intel, or anyone else. As a journalist it is part of my job to do this. It has nothing to do with one side or the other, just cleaning out the FUD.
The same information by: Sean Kalinich on 10/13/2009
Heise.de is saying the same thing that I did
Asus stated they do not know of any shortage and have no plans to phase anything out. They plan on an in house refresh of the GT200 parts soon.

Another source of ours is saying that a couple of NV only partners did not order enough GT200 parts. They are now facing a self-created shortage. They are also keeping the ones they have in the US leaving the EU with low stock of these parts.

This last item looks like it could be the source of the rumor. As it stands right now we do not feel that the GT200 parts are being phased out at all, there just appears to be a few companies that might not have ordered enough parts to meet demand. Perhaps they were expecting Fermi Stock by this time and did not plan well enough.

Sean,

Why are you the point man on this issue? Are the NVIDIA fanbois all up in arms to the point that you have this irresistible urge to calm their angst?

Just ask NVIDIA.....

They will either tell you the truth or obfuscate (lie).

One way or the other, time will tell.

New Servers are in!

 Greetings and welcome to BSN*,

We have just acquired several brand new servers that are being configured on a multiple 100Mbps links and set up in line with the new features and services that are launching soon. We were assured this investment will solve any issues that plagued the site as a consequence of being linked on mainstream media networks.

We will inform you when the server change takes place, as BSN will be offline for 24-72 hours. Expect a heads-up a week ahead.
