AMD Shortage: Apple empties AMD stock, buys all 4800 series cards

The launch of Radeon 5800 series and subsequent launch of Radeon 5700 was greeted by immense number of positive reviews. In all fairness, AMD did an excellent job in infusing DirectX 11 technology into its R700-like architecture and adding immersive features such as Eyefinity. Personally, I consider Eyefinity to be one of infliction points for next generation gaming. The decision to bundle DirectX 11 games is also an important one - DiRT 2 and/or BattleForge.

However, AMD's own partners are growling about shortage of parts all across the board. Given that the allocation for 5000 series is limited, partners tried to fulfill their backlog for all those 4800 orders. As it usually happen, things are progressing nicely in the AIB shark-pool until a big shark comes in and snatches the allocation.

According to our sources, Apple was the Great White for Q3 2009. The giant from Cupertino bought complete 60-day, two month stock of ATI Radeon 4000 series chips, most notably the Radeon HD 4850. This "shopping" by Apple was caused by AMD's sales initiative in order to try to get into black for Q3'09. Remember -  Dirk Meyer promised that AMD would return to profitability in H2'2009 - and ATI sales folks are certainly doing the best they can to achieve just that.

The new Apple machines will feature ATI Radeon HD 4850 as a more affordable BTO [Build-To-Order] option, complementing current ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB as a $399 option. We are not aware when the Apple BTO system refresh will happen, but expect an announcement in the next couple of weeks.

All in all, it looks like ATI is really saving AMD's bacon, because if there weren't for that ATI purchase, AMD would look gloomy indeed. Instead, you'll see quite good news on the graphics front in those Q3 2009 financial results. Will this Apple's two-month stock buyout enough to pull the company into the black? Only time will tell - we only need to wait until tomorrow [Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 5:00PM ET].

A day will possible an AMD CPU/GPU system in Apple Machines..
I hope :-).... I think. 3 or 4 years Apple uses own Chips (bought P.A.SEMI in 2008) or AMD, and throw out Intel.
RE: Apple hired ATI graphics guy by: Theo Valich on 10/14/2009
Apple actually hired one person before Bob Drebin... and I consider that person to be the biggest Apple scoop. Mr. Raja Koduri - a modest but brilliant engineer who rose through the ranks... and also became C-level exec for the GPG. In my personal opinion, Raja's determination was of key reasons how ATI suceeded in performing that 180-degree turn after R600 faltered.

Possibly another reason for buying ATI products:

"The former CTO for the company's ATI graphics product group, Bob Drebin, has indicated on his LinkedIn profile that he is now a Senior Director for an unnamed group within Apple"

apple doesnt care about the 5800 series, because they dont support Directx. so the rest of it doesnt mean anything. the 4800's support opencl 3.0, so that is good enough for them. yes they perform better, but with apple you get 1-2 year old performance anyway.
Good news indeed!!!! by: Anonymous on 10/14/2009
No longer is AMD a 2nd tier company. Apple puts the crem de'la crem in all their devices and machines. So far we have Xbox renewing there contract for the 360 2nd gen and now we hear Apple is on board,,,,,they might just suprise us tomorrow. If so look for a "Gap-up" to $8 or higher.
$399 for a 4870? by: Anonymous on 10/14/2009
Apple takes quite a markup over about the online price of about $150. If they can sell cards for well over twice their value just by putting them in their machines, no wonder they bought so many.
Great by: Anonymous on 10/14/2009

IP address change delay

Greetings,

The planned network provider change will not happen as planned, due to our site administrator ending in hospital as a consequence of his gliding accident. The wounds are not life-threatening but Mr. Ivica Hosko is still in the hospital, four days after the crash with transportation to Zagreb in two days time. We send our best wishes and hope for a speedy recovery. As soon as Mr. Hosko returns to his daily post, we'll announce the details of our network provider switch.

The following message is for Mr. Ivica himself:  "Ivica, you nut - gliding around a 2km/6600ft mountain with changeable winds in November?"

Thanks for understanding,

Ed-in-chief
