UPDATED: Infinity Ward's MW2 server decision results in economic implications

Late last week there was an interview with Robert Bowling [known as FourTwoZero on Twitter]. He cleared up the rumors about delays and said that they did not expect to see any delays of the game itself, but that there was much more to come. He then began to talk about the fact that Infinity Ward would be coming out with a new online game system called IWNet which was a way of match making PC gamers instead of allowing the traditional dedicated server model. In addition to this, they would also be creating a private game mode, but this too would be running off of the IWNet proprietary multiplayer platform.

Rob also detailed that there was going to be a partnership with Steam and that they would be using VAC as the method of anti-cheating as opposed to Punkbuster. So not only were they doing away with dedicated servers, they were also doing away with Punkbuster. In a way, this is a positive movement that should prevent cheating, but also makes up one game less to play on LAN parties. The servers would not be using Steam for matchmaking, but the details are on hold as Valve Corporation will be releasing a statement soon about the involvement of Steam in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Image from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Playable only on Infinity Ward-sanctioned servers.

So, how does this all create an economic impact? It cuts out 3rd party server hosts who would normally be responsible for hosting the dedicated servers for various clans that would move over to this new game and purchase those servers or at least rent them monthly. A statement posted on the Infinity Ward forums
that came from a gameservers.com representative stated;

"Ticket JCG-53334 has been updated by Tanner Hurst [staff].

Hey John,

I can't lie, as of right now we will not be able to support the game.

IW has decided to NOT provide dedicated server support for the game, so therefor servers cannot be rented.

In the case that they change their mind (which we all hope they do) we will definitely be supporting the game.

Tanner Hurst

"

The outrage over this decision also sparked an on-line petition that is going around online that anyone can sign that asks that they bring back dedicated servers. This was created because the petition on the Infinity Ward forums was deleted in a typical strongarming move known on all official game forums, especially ones in relation to Activision Blizzard. It states:

"To: Infinity Ward
Get Infinity Ward to review their decision not to allow fully dedicated servers for their forthcoming game release CoD:MW2. Remember that this Call of Duty was made popular by PC Gamers who have supported the series throughout.
Sincerely,
The undersigned"

This petition resulted in over 95,000 signatures, gaining around 25-30,000 signatures on daily basis.

All of this is on the heels of many PC gamers feeling constantly abandoned by developers in various games. Because of this, Infinity Ward may stand to lose a lot of money from the PC gamer crowd which was originally responsible for the runaway success of the Call of Duty franchise to begin with. This will probably cause the game to be a short-lived title that will most likely have a very short shelf-life in respect to games like Counter-Strike and Counter-Strike: Source which are still a widely played games almost a decade after its release. In my opinion, they're trying to ruin PC gaming for the sake of control of the game. Also, as many PC gamers have experienced in games like Left 4 Dead, the ping in servers will begin to go through the roof in comparison to a dedicated server.
If you want to hear the whole chat between the guys at BASHandSlash.com and Robert Bowling, fast forward to 1:38:00 where Robert Bowling hops on in.

Editor's take

At the end of the day, Infinity Ward wanted to take control of their game in the same manner as Blizzard did with Battle.Net. Given that both IW and Blizzard's titles are published by the same company [Activision Blizzard Inc.], we're not surprised that IW went with their own platform. In a way, I found this quite inefficient, but there are economic reasons for that move as well.
For decades, gaming developers were spending hundreds, if not thousands of work hours in order to create dedicated server for the game, and usually those servers were given for free, creating a whole new economy around dedicated gaming server business. You didn't need to buy the game to run the server and at the end of the day - that was wrong move from day one. After dedicated gaming server became a real business, it was weird seeing massively pirated titles being played at these services, providing zero dollars in revenue. In the case of Unreal Tournament 3, Mark Rein gave me a sum of 40,000,000 pirated clients who tried to access the server, yielding a grand total of two billion dollar damage for Epic Games alone. Yes, that’s a "b". Just like Valve proved, it is possible to run a dedicated server business by connecting a dedicated server on Steam [true, $$$ is involved].

Update #1 October 20th, 2009 20:29 GMT - We have received e-mail from Mr. Anthony Quon, Chief Operating Officer of GameServers.com. According to Anthony, the ticket in system never contained the controversial quote "Don't hold me to this but at last check the cancelations were upwards of 61,000 and counting."
We have removed the allegedly original quote and replaced it with the quote provided to us by COO of GameServers.com. At first, it looked like the forum poster was caught with his hands in a cookie jar, replacing the original ticket with a controversial number which can trace actual financial loss for the company in question. In the picture below, you can see the quote posted by tazman911.

Update #2 October 20th, 2009 22:06 GMT - We were contacted by forum poster tazman911, who explained to us that the quote originated from another site, Sobsquad.net. In order to read the original location of the GameServers.com quote, you have to register for Sobsquad.net forums. We hope that this clarifies the situation. The post in question was published by no other than a founder of SoBsquad.net, which would remove the doubt in our minds that the original ticket was altered by Sneaky.

Update #3, October 21st, 2009 00:21 GMT - Robert Bowling aka FourZeroTwo posted an update on his blog, referring to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 as "the biggest investment Infinity Ward has ever made into the PCversion of our games. It’s also the most feature-rich PC version we’veever made. IWNET takes the benefits of dedicated servers and allowsthem to be utilized and accessed by every player, out of the box, whileremoving the barrier to entry for players unaware of how to maintain aserver on their own."

Maps by: Anonymous on 11/12/2009
I'm surprised more people aren't mentioning the custom maps as a key component of the dedicated server approach. I got real bored real fast of the handful of maps officially available for COD4. if it wasn't for the custom map community I would have stopped playing a long time ago. It just gets boring. With custom maps there is something new to learn all the time, it keeps the player interested. The more dedicated the players are the more loyal they are to the franchise.

All this nonsense about clan players ruining the multi-player experience for casual gamers is also a bit off-target. I think you get better by playing against people who are better than you. It is how you learn. it is certainly how I learned. There are better ways to bring the casual gamer along.

hi um I'm on the ps3 and I've been waiting for this game for the past year so I got it yestarday and played it fine awsome game but I got on this morning and I'm still waiting for the server to connect I thought that IW wasn't going to have any problems with the server
DICE V. IW by: Anonymous on 10/31/2009
You must look at all the promises that DICE put in when BF originally came out. The promised one thing to the next. As a BF2'er they have their problems as well. Players were OUTRAGED wating for patches, glitchers, hackers, to server crashers. Just to name some of the least. No One company is better than the next. They just use different tatics and ploys. MW1 was a fresh breath from BF2, a different look and feel to FPS, but it also lacked size in their maps. They "IW" wanted a CQC game, but to a BF fan this was a joke a spawn rapers fantasy.
Now to the appeal to the casual gamer, that is a joke, IW don't want some fresh face joe buying the game and quitting, because of a more hardcore player that squashes his dream in a 10 or 30 min round. The casual gamer gets frustrated so quickly then QUITS. " A Quitter will always Quit, A winner takes takes and sees that and rises up to that challenge"
treyarch fags by: Anonymous on 10/28/2009
Seriously U can try to put that shit on a disc i wont even bother buying the game & your trying to stop people from using modded controllers GOOD luck with that cause all of us that mod we find another way to by pass your LAME game filter and keep playing how we like ! WHy doesnt trey arch stoip bitchin about people using mods online in games ! seriously most of us have a mod or modded controlers so wat ever think of this dumbass : so people have trouble playing a game like others. Example NOM4D plays with his lips ( bad ass player) and people say hes modding , how the hell could he be modding wen hes playing COD5 with his lips ? See these dumbasses just bankrupted them selves they put a LAME SYSTEM IN AND SCREWED OVER THEIR SERVERS So basicaly TREYARCH SCREWED THEIR OWN COMPANY OVER By installing steam on the Disc ! Sorry your games are not perfect nor is the creator of the game. Its always been the mods, the pc gamers , and the people who hate mods ! I ll just get my hands on a better chip or program that will by pass your gay Detection system ! Soon some one will think of ways to detect your gay ass STEAM SHIT ON A GAME AND they will by pass it ! TREYARCH IS FULL OR SMART PEOPLE BUT ALSO FULL OF COMPLETE DUMBASSES WHO THINK PUTTING VAC AUTO DETECTION SYSTEM ON A GAME IS GONNA STOP HACKERS, MODS, PC GAMERS FROM BY PASSING YOUR GAY AND LAME SYSTEM ! What if we put an auto detection system on your servers and you had to install a bunch of our shit on your servers? you would be pissed ! NOM4D IS JUST AN EXAMPLE HE DOESNT CHEAT HIS PLAYING IS UNIQUE !
by: Anonymous on 10/25/2009
I'm going to laugh so hard if Treyarch gets the next Call of Duty and they add back dedicated servers. Then they would be the heroes and Infinity Ward the villains skulking in the dark. These days I play by 360 so these changes won't hurt me, still going to love MW2. Feel bad for the experienced PC player though, really does make all the difference in game quality. Lag on console is usually quite temporary and only for one game at a time, but on PC it can shift dramatically with a poor host. As for modding, don't really care because that is just a bonus anyway regardless of what people claim. Real issue is not having the freedom to set things up as you want them, have big games on a nice lag free server with a huge group of friends. Pretty lame.
Just sit back and relax by: Anonymous on 10/23/2009
Altough i have witnessed in the last 3 days an avalanche of very accurate explanations about this hole issue of dedi-serv vs IW.net on all the major foruns, gaming sites, blogs etc. I think there is something the hole PC gaming comunity is missing.

IW/Activision alredy know this.. has well has we do, and they are well aware of what they are doing is in fact killing the PC Game/Comunity. At this point its better if we stoped trying to "explain" to them why dedicated servers are the only way.

instead, VOTE with our wallets and boycote this ridiculous and idiotic fiasco aka MW2. Cause honestly one thing that pisses ppl more is not even the name calling, but the outright obscene and arrogant attempt to insult our collective inteligence.

Boycote MW2!!
WTF??? by: Anonymous on 10/23/2009
Guys look at it this way the game will cost 59.00 dollars. If every one that has signed the petition then right now at over a 147000 sig. that would cost Invinty Wards over 8.5 million in revenue. That how these corp. understand.

I can't believe Michael Jackson is releasing a DVD of his performance AFTER HE DIED! This is freakin' Tupac all over again.
Blackhand by: Anonymous on 10/23/2009
And to clarify, IW will not be hosting servers, they will simply be running a matchmaking service.

The game will be using listen servers, run on the PLAYER'S MACHINES!

Welcome back to the dark ages of peer to peer gaming.
Blackhand by: Anonymous on 10/23/2009
As you said L4D does use a mixture of dedicated servers and matchmaking, but matchmaking can rarely get everyone into a server that's best for everyone in the lobby (in terms of latency).

This is exactly the reason why the server browser is immensely popular in the PC version of L4D. It bypasses the mess associated matchmaking allowing for an optimal online experience with as low latency as possible, clan matches to be played and communities to be formed.
STEAM VIRUS? by: Anonymous on 10/22/2009
I'm still fuzzy, will it be necessary to install that damn virus/spyware crap called STEAM in order to play the game? I got F.E.A.R.3 and they had the crapware/spyware/virus called STEAM info on the side of the box in mice type. I didn't notice it until I went to install. I couldn't get my money back because the package was open and I'm NOT putting that freaking STEAM virus crapware back on my computer, so i was just screwed..........

So is the STEAM virus going to be included with MW2?
Lmao wow by: Anonymous on 10/22/2009
I fully planned to buy this game for PC for all CoD series being fun and hard core type games, but i have a 360 and have played cod4 on it, trying to turn the PC Servers into that would be fucking terrible no mod support hell they would probably start charging us for map packs to if they are trying to change everything else to console. i got sick of IW after they stopped doing anything new for COD4 before a year after it was released, but this is just terrible. will definitely be passing this news on to anyone else planning to buy this on PC.
Garbage !!! by: Anonymous on 10/22/2009
No dedicated servers = unplayable pings as seen on the console market. I always play on the servers where my connection is best.

Now we have no control over what server we are sent to.

So 6 leet players 12 noobs looking for a game. 6 leets get sent to a server with a sh1t ping due to matchmaking ? Why would anyone want to ?

by: Anonymous on 10/22/2009
I must admit I was and still am eagerly awaiting this release for the PC. Although after reading the news on no dedicated servers I have canceled my pre-order. I will not be purchasing or playing this in any form.

I've bought the series from day one. Now you wreck the whole PC community and server hosting which has put the green stuff in your pockets !!!

Hope the sales flop tbh.

*]WCM[*ActOfGod

Well it looks as if the developers want to control us pc gamers like they control the consol gamers. Best way to fight them is to not buy it. If they want to sell themselfs out to the console market ONLY then let them. Madden '09 and 10 have done it and there numbers dropped by over 2 million users....And they say Piracy is hurtful to there pockerbooks. Man they must all think we are stupid. Jokes on them.

i cant believe what they have done, I'm in a clan with over 100 active members and all of them are not buying the game now,, going to wait till march for battlefield bad company 2

I.W can go f**k themselves thats the last time i buy 1 of there games.......
Seriously! by: Anonymous on 10/21/2009
I can't believe the move they made, I was all excited about MW2... and my clan aswell... over 200 players... and 99% of us have cancelled. We though this game would have more quality then COD5 by Treyarch but I guess... we can't expect much from Infini..Ward.. company.

Very disapointed... no dedicated servers... no modding and probably no custom maps.

THE SUCK. Let's just all move on... next.
