EVGA and nVidia to launch a new Dual GPU card on Halloween

Thanks to two members from SLIZone Forum, F34R and Obi-Wan Kenobi, we learned that nVidia is going to launch a new product on Halloweeen. Back on GPU Technology Conference, we were told that the company will launch a GeForce-based product "end of October" and "early November", but that seemed 2-3 weeks too early for Fermi, GT300/GF100-based desktop cards.

Club SLI newsletter sent to one of our readersAfter checking out EVGA.com, we found a page in the news section that announces the event as well. As it turns out, EVGA and nVidia teamed up [or to be more precise - EVGA's engineering team delivered] and organized a launch party for 300 lucky participants who will come to nVidia's campus over at Santa Clara, CA and witness the launch of a new GeForce product. This kicked out interest into high gear, but being geographically dislocated [there are 'only' 6131 miles as the crow flies between my building and nVidia's Santa Clara campus] meant that we'll have to skip on the event. We turned to our sources and after few hours discovered the reason behind the event.

After talking to several people in the know, we managed to get to the bottom of this quite exciting announcement. While we don't have a final name for the card, it turns out that EVGA created a dual GPU card by combining GeForce GTS 250 with GeForce GTX 275. That's right, a dedicated PhysX GPU in the form of trusty G92 [debuted as 8800, rebranded as 9800, GTS 250 and GTX 260M/280M] and GT206/GT200b GPU for graphics. This is quite an interesting combination, to say the least. You're free to correct me in the comments if I am wrong - but I think this is the first time that any company took two different GPU chips and combined them on the same PCB. I've been a tech journalist for 10 years [Dec 15, 1999], but I never heard of such a combination.

EVGA "GeForce Meets PhysX" Mockup: GT200b and 896MB on the left, G92b and 512MB on the right

As you can see in the crude mockup picture we created above [created with two images from colleagues at TechPowerUp!, image doesn't feature correct amount of memory chips], EVGA took the single PCB design from GeForce GTX 295, left one GeForce GTX 275 and simply placed a G92 GPU next to it. From one side, you have 896MB used by the GTX 275, and the second GPU - G92 uses only 512MB, making up for a never-seen-before 1408MB of GDDR3 video memory.

From our understanding, NVIO2 chip is connected to GTX 275, while GTS 250 cannot display an image at all. The sole purpose of GTS 250 is to be used for PhysX effects - during regular day in Windows, the G92b GPU sits in idle mode and consumers moderate amount of power. The chip is only powered up when PhysX gets into overdrive. Do note that the data mentioned above is our estimate.

We'll leave out a very interesting story about how come nVidia went into all that effort to create a single-PCB GTX 295 for another time, but the biggest thing about this announcement is EVGA. The company isn't afraid to wet its feet in non-reference board building, and after witnessing the launch of GTX 285 Classified, a triple 6-pin PEG connector graphics board for ultimate GPU overclocking [and a good exercise for upcoming Fermi-based GeForce 300 series] - we now have this quite interesting product.

We do not have information about the price, but we'll take an educated guess and estimate the price in the range between GeForce GTX 285 1GB and 2GB models [$349-419], going against the ATI Radeon HD 5850 and 5870. All in all, this is going to be quite an interesting Halloween. Can you say: "Trick or Treat?"

The answer: The card also calculates how a bat flies.

I did see this a while ago but thought i'd comment. The crappiness of physx is that it demands a hell of a lot of processing power to run well. My old gtx 295 did it very well but i really dont see the point in paying for a card that is technically designed for physx only. I mean, if it's not a physx title, the G92 component sits there twiddling it's thumbs. And you paid a premium over the 285 price (if estimate above is correct)for that pleasure.
Not worth the money unless all games had Physx.
And like the rest of the comments, Fermi needs to appear soon or Nvidia are screwed - and that would be bad for competition and innovation.

YOU TRICKED ME THOUGHT GTx 300 was comming out in a week
woah by: Anonymous on 10/22/2009
geez, kool down kool aid.

no need to go apeturd on Theo. He's just reporting the news. Altho how he reckons its going to be an "interesting halloween" is beyond me... this card cannot compete with ATi's 5800 series if its selling for $350-$420.

yep, another stopgap move from nvidia which is showing their desparation to stem the loss of marketshare.
Fudo, how's the green Kool-Aid? by: Anonymous on 10/22/2009
Fudo, when you gonna stop sucking on JHH's dick and realize you've been played big time? This desperate, stop-gap measure won't compete effectively with Evergreen, and Fermi is about as close to production as a faster-than-light hyperdrive. In fact, considering we start production of the TerraFTL Type 1A engines next month, we'll beat nVidiots by at least a year.

So stop giving JHH blow-jobs and go out and dig up some FACTS instead of just being his PR cunt.
If you're considering a 5850 by: Anonymous on 10/22/2009
then don't bother waiting for Fermi.

Nvidia isn't launching with any low-end or mid-range parts.

There will be nothing remotely as affordable as 5850.
So and so... by: Radu M. Cosma on 10/22/2009
Great idea, but a terrible combination.
A G94 or G84 (or perhaps even G96?) would have been much more suitable for assisting a GT200 with PhysX effects.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there's a long way to games that will require something like G92 solely for PhysX calculations.
Perhaps a better combination would be Fermi+G92 (it that's even possible given the 2 use different memory types).
Will this thing even sell? by: Anonymous on 10/22/2009
People don't 2 old products in 1 box!

But be careful, semiaccurate may use that photo and say "we discovered another fake nvidia card"! hehe!
by: Anonymous on 10/21/2009
could this be like a preview for the next gen cards.. do they also feature an extra physx chip or will it be integrated into the new chip ?
Lunch Fermi ? by: Anonymous on 10/21/2009
Nvidia , Please launch fermi (GT300). I am waiting for that GPU... No more rebatching/rebranding
physx=joke by: Anonymous on 10/21/2009
Is this one of those parties where its not actually a halloween party but rather a surprise party hosted by Fermi just to fool me into dressing like a bat...
Otherwise this is not funny nVidia! What are we suppose to do with a card like that at this point in time
Knife to a gun fight by: Anonymous on 10/21/2009
This suppose to distract us from the fact that nVidia is very late to the, ATi hosted, directx 11 party?
Quit stalin nVidia by: Anonymous on 10/21/2009
All i know is Fermi based cards need to join the party, soon.
Otherwise will end up getting the 5850. It seems to be good a performer. If i can get my hands on one cause they really perform good in the sales department as well. Have u noticed that, nVidia...?
Looking at the calendar... by: Anonymous on 10/21/2009
... I had to check twice to make sure I had not warped to April Fool's day

What will the "dedicated" PhysX chip do that it couldn't do if it was also able to render graphics?

Seems like a waste.
rebrand me by: Anonymous on 10/21/2009
WOW im getting sick of this....nvidia upto its old trix, this is really scrapping the bottom of they barrel, and what a suprise... they have only done this with evga to keep them in the limelight and stop them thinking about using ati gpu's.

after buying nvidia gpu's for a number of years im done... i got myself a 5870 and it looks like i will be staying with the red team.

New Servers are in!

 Greetings and welcome to BSN*,

We have just acquired several brand new servers that are being configured on a multiple 100Mbps links and set up in line with the new features and services that are launching soon. We were assured this investment will solve any issues that plagued the site as a consequence of being linked on mainstream media networks.

We will inform you when the server change takes place, as BSN will be offline for 24-72 hours. Expect a heads-up a week ahead.
