AMD set to increase Radeon HD 5800 prices?

Ever before AMD launched its Evergreen series, we knew the allocation numbers for the ATI 4800 and 5000 series - and the numbers didn't look good. If the recent rumors about AMD laying off more staff in 1Q 2010 come true, we cannot view them as anything else but a company who has failed to supply enough products to the market.

Marvin the paranoid android or simply - the codename for ATI Radeon HD 5870In case you didn't know, the codenames for all 5000 series boards were named after characters in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The unfortunate part about this is that Radeon HD 5870 carried the name "Marvin" and the worldwide availability is definitely starting to look like something Marvin would comment on.

It looks like Marvin would have a comment or two on TSMC's "screwing the pooch" in a very big way. We also learned that it is not true that Jen-Hsun went to visit TSMC to discuss lowering prices of the wafers… the matter was much more serious, and it touched the overall yields that TSMC is achieving with 40nm process and what the future holds [32nm, 28nm, 22nm]. We already know the time frame of ATI graphics debuting inside GlobalFoundries and if you ask some of key insiders in AMD, that time cannot come soon enough [but first GF has to ramp up bulk silicon production].

Getting back on the subject, we now know the real figures of just how many 5850, 5870, 5750 and 5770 boards AMD sold to its customers, and the number sure ain't pretty. Overall, the allocation of 5800 series is in the very low five figures. If we would compare this to the ATI Radeon 4800 or nVidia GeForce GTX 280 or 285 hard launches - the figures would not be "flattering" for the 5800 series. There are many problems in getting sufficient amount of boards, and the "blame game" does not exist here. It is solely laid on TSMC's inability to manufacture a sufficient amount of chips. One could debate that AMD didn't order enough chips, but if AMD got enough chips - they would not have this situation on their hands.

In order to address the chronic shortage of 5850 and 5870 boards [we heard multiple cases of backlogs being into millions of dollars], AMD decided to raise up the prices by anywhere between $15-25 per card, so the new prices of 5850 will be up from 279.99 to the originally planned $299 and when the stock refreshes, Radeon HD 5870 should go for $399.

The new prices are set into action with the next batch of cards… thus, expect partners to roll on custom cooling products [such as Sapphire's Vapor-X] and add additional $10-50 price premium, depending on product being used [custom dual-slot, vapor chamber, liquid cooling]. One thing is certain - if you see a 5870 in store and considered buying it - don't expect that Black Friday or Cyber-Monday will cut the prices from current levels. They could drop back to this level, but availability will not significantly improve for weeks to come - the backlog is now eating all the [limited] fresh supply.

RE: GTX275 by: Theo Valich on 10/28/2009
Just to explain the Tesla difference. Both Quadro FX5800 and Tesla C1060 [and S1070 boards, for that matter] feature 4GB of GDDR3 memory, usually created by putting 32 memory chips on the PCB: 16 on the front [just like GTX280/285] and 16 on the back.

According to my colleague Nova, this move had negative effect on board temperature, as the back of the FX5800 card is sizzling hot.

I am too intrigued in HPC deals that nVidia signed. I thought they're all GT300/Fermi based, but maybe nV has an ace in their sleeves.

New GTX275 by: Anonymous on 10/28/2009
Why would NVIDIA even bother launching another overpriced DX10 graphics card? AND with only one partner... wierd.

since the one guy works for NVIDIA can he tell me what the difference is between a TESLA board, and a normal graphics card? and who were those thousands sold to? I haven't seen that press release yet.

It always comes down to some idiots ranting about how good 'their' team is. I still have my GTX 295 but I have bought 2 5850's and the reason is simple, power/heat/sound to rendering performance. So i'm clearly a graphics whore but an unbiased one. (I'll switch to Fermi if price point and the above ratios match.
What gets my goat is the pimply toss pots that mention 'charlie demerijan' as if he's god. Charlie famously stated the GTX x2 would never appear (the 295 is the x2). He said half a year ago there'd be no 200's left (you can still buy 'em and they're still not EOL'd). So stfu about Charlie you ape.
However, ATI have screwed up with their marketing, need more units for sale now before Fermi raises it's undoubtedly ugly and powerful head.
Ah, what do i know?
ATI will have bulk silicon Q1 2010 by: Anonymous on 10/28/2009
When Chartered is a done deal deal, ATI/AMD will have bulk silicon chips per an overheard conversation at the tech show where they had a booth last week ...
That's bull by: Anonymous on 10/28/2009
We won Tesla contracts and put thousands of GT200b chips on Tesla boards. If we EOL'ed GTX275, how come we are launching one with EVGA on Friday?

Since you're cheering for AMD, how come you are not writing home about the fact that AMD only sold 20,000 5850 and 5870 boards combined? You call that hard launch?
Yes by: Anonymous on 10/28/2009
it would solve their problem, kind of. By increasing price, they reduce supplied demand and bring it closer to quantity supplied. Therefore, less of a shortage.

IMO this would just be a bad move. Firstly, it leaves a negative impression on customers (a price hike??). Secondly, it would mean less revenues and probably less profits as well.

The reason that you cannot get any GTX275 or GTX285 is because nVidia has EOL (End of Life) them, just as charlie reported weeks ago. nVidia has stopped making the overly expensive non-competitive chips.

As if increasing the price would solve TSMC's inability to reliably produce 40nm GPUs.

Really? by: Anonymous on 10/28/2009
Than TSMC must have screwed up 55nm process too. Why?Because even though they are on the market for a long time and I can't buy on newegg any GTX285 or GTX275(only one on stock)
By the way @ Zip Zoom Fly they are still 379.
I think NewEgg just tries to gain more with the shortage.

New Servers are in!

 Greetings and welcome to BSN*,

We have just acquired several brand new servers that are being configured on a multiple 100Mbps links and set up in line with the new features and services that are launching soon. We were assured this investment will solve any issues that plagued the site as a consequence of being linked on mainstream media networks.

We will inform you when the server change takes place, as BSN will be offline for 24-72 hours. Expect a heads-up a week ahead.

The BSN* Team
