Warhammer Online event Call to Arms: Beyond the Sands is due to start in late April. It will be a second event in the line of three which herald the coming of WAR's expansion Land of the Dead. This free expansion brings a face-off with (The Mummy inspired) Tomb Kings of Khemri.
Prior event Call to Arms: Bitter Rivals gave us two new classes and a dreadful 1.2 patch. Greenskin berserking class Choppa and a Dwarf maniac with suicidal tendencies Slayer are quite a success as they offer players pure dmg [Damage] and pure fun. Unlike their other less successful colleagues, Mythic made them mostly right with a proper balance of risk and reward gameplay. Sadly, patch 1.2 was not so good - while it fixed trade skills and tweaked the interface, it also broke months of class balancing, destroyed Marauder and White Lion melee dps [damage per second] classes and reduced everyone to area of effect spam bots. It also added huge amounts of new bugs and technical issues. Single target damage in this game is officially dead now, well except if you are a Bright Wizard but even then you won't bother with it as your AoE [Area of Effect] can snuff whole parties. Majority of players would agree that it is not the right time for additional content due to this. We have already addressed this issue in our two previous articles, "What happens when game developers start undoing their own work and destroying the created world?" and "What happens when game developers and publishers want to take a run at quick money and copy World of Warcraft?".
What lurks beyond the Sands
While Order is trying to secure newly emerged mysterious artifacts the forces of Destruction have already awakened a powerful enemy. Lich Priests, servants of the dreaded Tomb Kings of Khemri are coming to Order and Destruction lands to retrieve stolen artifacts for their masters and bolster their ranks with fresh batch of corpses. Players will have to fight in open Realm vs. Realm lakes [Player versus Player zones] to secure expedition crates from the Artifact Depots. Some "powerful thingy" that serves Tomb Kings awaits those who control ancient artifacts in Open Fallen Kings RvR PQ [Public Quest]. Possibly a Bone Giant, but who knows?
We are expecting four new quest chains, including an epic quest which will unlock as the story progresses. The basic reward for an event will be the unique title Grave Robber, Advanced unique Tomb King Trophies and finally Elite Aviator Goggles.
There is little doubt that content that is coming our way is going to be fun considering good things that Mythic added to the game so far. However greater focus should be applied to problems that are already in the game like class imbalance, a bad loot system and lackluster city sieges.
We will cover this expansion following the release of this add-on.
