PC Perspective's Allyn Malventano got more than he bargained for after his first article pointed out the problems on Intel's X25-M SSD drives. Prior to Easter, PC Perspective received new Firmware for the X25-M drive and took another hard run at his SSD.
First off, the new firmware really fixes the problem. Although the issue is unlikely to come up on a standard setup, it can cause you real performance issues depending on your usage (many small files are the key to slowing down your SSD). Allyn has truly tortured his X25-M after applying the firmware update and didn't find any performance breakdowns.
It seems like the engineers at Intel have done an excellent job replicating the benchmark setup used by Allyn and breaking down on the problem itself as well as fixing it within just two months after the initial findings were published. If you wanted to purchase an Intel SSD drive or already have one, you may also go to and grab the firmware update to fix your own X25-M.
Thumbs up to Allyn and Intel - Well done! Now we can really start to recommend SSD drives for storage solutions in high-end machines.
