nVidia's GT300 specifications revealed - it's a cGPU!

Over the past six months, we heard different bits'n'pieces of information when it comes to GT300, nVidia's next-gen part. We decided to stay silent until we have information confirmed from multiple sources, and now we feel more confident to disclose what is cooking in Santa Clara, India, China and other nV sites around the world.

GT300 isn't the architecture that was envisioned by nVidia's Chief Architect, former Stanford professor Bill Dally, but this architecture will give you a pretty good idea why Bill told Intel to take a hike when the larger chip giant from Santa Clara offered him a job on the Larrabee project.

Thanks to Hardware-Infos, we managed to complete the puzzle what nVidia plans to bring to market in couple of months from now.

What is GT300?

Even though it shares the same first two letters with GT200 architecture [GeForce Tesla], GT300 is the first truly new architecture since SIMD [Single-Instruction Multiple Data] units first appeared in graphical processors.

GT300 architecture groups processing cores in sets of 32 - up from 8 in GT200 architecture. But the difference between the two is that GT300 parts ways with the SIMD architecture that dominate the GPU architecture of today. GT300 Cores rely on MIMD-similar functions [Multiple-Instruction Multiple Data] - all the units work in MPMD mode, executing simple and complex shader and computing operations on-the-go. We're not exactly sure should we continue to use the word "shader processor" or "shader core" as these units are now almost on equal terms as FPUs inside latest AMD and Intel CPUs.

GT300 itself packs 16 groups with 32 cores - yes, we're talking about 512 cores for the high-end part. This number itself raises the computing power of GT300 by more than 2x when compared to the GT200 core. Before the chip tapes-out, there is no way anybody can predict working clocks, but if the clocks remain the same as on GT200, we would have over double the amount of computing power.
If for instance, nVidia gets a 2 GHz clock for the 512 MIMD cores, we are talking about no less than 3TFLOPS with Single-Precision. Dual precision is highly-dependent on how efficient the MIMD-like units will be, but you can count on 6-10x improvement over GT200.

This is not the only change - cluster organization is no longer static. The Scratch Cache is now much more granular and looks like L1 cache organization, allowing for larger interactivity between the cores inside the cluster. GPGPU e.g. GPU Computing applications should really benefit from this architectural choice. When it comes to gaming, the question is obviously - how good can GT300 be? Please do bear in mind that this 32-core cluster will be used in next-generation Tegra, Tesla, GeForce and Quadro cards.

This architectural change should result in dramatic increase in Dual-Precision performance, and if GT300 packs enough registers - performance of both Single-Precision and Dual-Precision data might surprise all the players in the industry. Given the timeline when nVidia begun work on GT300, it looks to us like GT200 architecture was a test for real things coming in 2009-2010 timeframe.

Just like the CPU, GT300 gives direct hardware access [HAL] for CUDA 3.0, DirectX 11, OpenGL 3.2 and OpenCL. You can also do direct programming on the GPU, but we're not exactly sure would development of such a solution that be financially feasible. But the point in question is that now you can do it. It looks like Tim Sweeney's prophecy is slowly, but certainly - coming to life.

GT300 by: Anonymous on 10/7/2009
I know only 1 thing; it's gotta be good cuz they have to beat ati's 5870!
Bummer! by: Anonymous on 8/28/2009
The sample boards will come with a GPU clock. The alleged silicon GT300 A1 ticks to 0.7 GHz, with 512 cores working at 1.6 GHz. GDDR5 memory has been increased to 1.1 GHz or 4 , QDR 4 GT / s [billion transfers per second], resulting in bandwidth mass storage 281.6 GB / s. According to information, nVidia initially pointed the ratio to 1:1 GeForce GTX280 with a basis for comparison. If the leak Information is true and these clocks are final, this would mean GTX380 clock failed targeted %'s by a double-digit percentage”

damn, a single gpu!!!!
i just hope that
it beats the 4870x2,
how much ddr3 does it
have?

Very nice site!
SIMD, SIMT, MIMD, MPMD or simply marketing? by: Gipsel on 4/24/2009
How I would interprete the data is that nvidia went from G80/G92 with two shader multiprocessors (closest to a CPU core you can get with a current GPU) per cluster to three multiprocessors with GT200 and raise that now to 4 shader multiprocessors per cluster with the GT300.
That equals a ALU:TEX ratio raise from 2:1 (G80/G92) over 3:1 (GT200) to 4:1 (GT300), the value AMD/ATI is already for quite a while ;)

The raise to 16 clusters of 4 multiprocessors each containing the well known 8 shader units working in a SIMD fashion on a 32 entry wide vector (nvidia calls that a warp) over 4 cycles will get them competetive with the theoretical shader power of AMDs RV870 only if you count in the additional MUL capability in addition to a MADD. It is not going to be a clean sweep if you ask me.

If ATI really doubles the number of ROPs with RV870 and raises the shader units only by 50% like rumored, we will see how ATIs architecture will do with that limit (I think it was not hit very hard because of bandwidth constraints) removed. According to the rumours ATI will further raise the ALU:TEX ratio from 4:1 to something like 5:1. But I wouldn't buy into that, yet. The decision to include 20 VLIW units (5 scalar ones) per SIMD core does not make too much sense from my point of view. That would raise the wavefront size (AMDs name for nvidia's Warp) to 80 threads and would make them a bit unbalanced.

Regarding the fuzz about SIMT, SIMD, MIMD or MPMD, it would really surprise me if there is much more than just some PR hype. If I would have to take a guess that it is just a fancy way to say that chip will be able to run a number of different shaders at the same time (which is possible already today). Maybe they will expose this functionality better with CUDA or something in that direction. If you want, you could call AMDs VLIW architecture MIMD, but it is better described as 5 parallel vector pipes, physically 16 floats wide (as Larrabee will be) working over 4 cycles on a 64 float vector (a wavefront).

Making a real 8 wide MIMD architecture with 64 cores (16 clusters with 4 multiprocessors each) may burst the transistor and die size budget at 40nm. The bandwidth requirements for the instruction caches will be insane (at least a factor 32 larger than now) for maybe a 10% performance increase in the best case. It would be easier to just add 10% execution resorces.

Intel is also only going to create a more flexible SIMD architecture with Larrabee than current GPUs. And Intel has most likely an advantage with their 32nm node compared to nvidia. From the performance/transistor and performance/power metric SIMD is most likely the best you can do for throughput computing (as graphics).
Down and dirty... by: MB on 4/22/2009
So, we'd be looking at something like 22x22mm again...and ~3 billion transistors.

I'm assuming TMUs are staying at 8 per array (128)?

While your statement of 3TF would be correct, I wonder if the 2xMADD+MUL will become 3 MIMDs? That would be 6 flops per cycle. With a die that big, it's not crazy to think clocks will not be raised substantially over GT200.

For instance, if it maintained the 1/2.5 shader/core speed ratio, you'd end up with:

512x6x1625 (650c) = 5TF

Also interesting is the rumor swirling that rv870 is 1280sp/64 tmu. Funny to think that would make rv870 a 256 shader part...or a spec of exactly half of GT300. Granted, that architecture is a 4+1 arch (10 flops per clock) per shader, but that would basically be compensated by GT300's higher shader clock.

An X2 (mcm?) with these specs and a 975mhz clock would...theoretically...have the same flop count, and would actually lead in texture power.

Also, coincidentally, these would both be 4x the spec of the part that kick-started their respective archs (r600/G80).

Granted, the switch mid-stream to MIMD will kick start the much-needed fp power for nvidia's arch, and ATi in turn has learned they need to ramp their shared clock to compensate against the seperated shader clock of nvidia.

Who will have learned the bigger lesson?

With such different origins to these architectures, it's interesting how similar they eventually may become.
