Smart Display Company launches 5.11" USB displays for €79-99

The Germans at Smart Display Company teamed up with Taiwanese manufacturer Megtron and the first result is a USB powered display with a resolution of 240x128 pixels.
Let's face it - small displays are everywhere and are becoming a commodity. But the key part in any product becoming a mainstream is hitting a specific price target. Regardless are we writing about a $9.99 USB stick or a $999.99 Blu-ray player of yesteryear, or the latest computing technology, you have to hit a pricing point to be successful.

Internal version takes two 5.25" bays, while the external LCD can be used in both horizontal and vertical modes.

Meet SCD USB display, available as either an external or internal unit for 99 or 79 Euro. The internal unit will take two 5.25" bays and fit in almost every computer case out there, while the external unit is a little bit bigger - but still fits in the compact category. Given the resolution of 240x128 pixels, don't expect to run HD movies, but rather use the display to showcase all those information that you need to look for on the desktop. The information given varies from the time, system load, temperatures, e-mail, calendar, overclocking-friendly plugins, while the manufacturer is openly stating that it will make further modules available for download. If you want to program the module yourself, the display itself ships with an SDK package that supports all the popular operating systems, including Linux - serdisplib library is fully supported.

All in all, potentially a very interesting part. You can check the details at several e-tailers already, such as PDA Studio's ZephyrTechnology e-store in Italy.
