Kingston releases affordable SSD upgrade kits and new memory cooler

During Computex, Kingston announced two new products to the market. The first new product is a new addition to their SSDNow series of solid state drives. The new SSDs that were announced today will be known as the V series as opposed to their E and M series of drives. These drives will come as bundles for the end user in two forms, one being a laptop upgrade bundle and the other being a desktop upgrade bundle. We recently did a review of their M series bundle for the desktop which you can view here. Because these drives will be aimed towards the value segment of the market they will be less expensive and therefore also will be slower than their M and E series SSDs. These SSDs will be running at up to 100MB/sec. read; 80MB/sec. write based on their benchmark tests. They will also come in two sizes of 64GB and 128GB which is good because that means that people can get more data on their laptops and desktops and not have to deal with a small drive and the limitations and annoyances that accompany having a smaller SSD. These drives bring quite a bit of value because of the fact that they afford you the luxuries of an SSD without the exorbitant costs of an SSD while still performing on par with many other hard drives. We look forward to giving our readers a review of this drive once it becomes available.

Pictured above is the 64GB laptop bundle that will set you back 149.00

The prices and bundles will go as listed…
SNV125-S2BD/64GB-64GB 2.5 SATA SSD w/desktop bundle - $ 149.00
SNV125-S2BN/64GB-64GB 2.5 SATA SSD w/notebook bundle - $ 149.00
SNV125-S2BD/128GB-128GB 2.5 SATA SSD w/desktop bundle - $ 263.00
SNV125-S2BN/128GB-128GB 2.5 SATA SSD w/notebook bundle - $ 263.00

The following components will be included in the bundles… note that the prices do not change between the desktop and notebook upgrade kits. Also, remember that many people may not even need the external enclosure, but it is definitely great to have as an added feature. These drives will carry a 3 year warranty and of course be covered by Kingston’s standard 24/7 technical support.
1.         Kingston SSDNow V Series solid-state drive
2•         Acronis® True Image cloning software and CD installation guide
3•         3.5" mounting brackets and hardware (desktop bundle only)
4•         SATA data and power cable extenders (desktop bundle only)
5•         2.5" USB SATA external enclosure (notebook bundle only)

They are already available at newegg.com if you're interested in purchasing one.

In addition to the announcement of the V series of SSDs Kingston has also announced a HyperX memory cooler which can be seen here.

This memory cooler will run you about $23 alone and will also come bundled with two different kits of memory. They will also be bundled with their 6GB 1800 and 2000 MHz kits of HyperX T1 memory with the tall heatsink. Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to take a look at this memory cooler but to be quite honest most memory coolers are fairly straightforward. This one appears to be fairly quiet, but far from silent, only reaching a maximum of 28 dBA.

A video of the new HyperX Fan has also been posted on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKMtqL7pyQk.

Kingston will be demonstrating the V Series as well as other products during Computex on June 5th from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at a local jazz club.

Hi all,

I think that the point missed here is the targeted market. You have a beast of a workstation, but that workstation is pretty heavy. This is intended as a notebook storage and speed upgrade, mostly for notebooks with 4200 and 5400 rpm hard drives, and putting those old drives into an external 2.5" box.
To me, this is a great idea - I won't go into the quality of a product or value without seeing the drive first. But this is one of innovative products that should spun off others to make even a greater product.

But if you have a 2-3yr old notebook, upgrading the memory and this kit just might be something to expand the lifetime... for instance, I am typing this on a four year old Qosmio G20 that had a RAID failure. The system has a single core processor and 1GB of memory [our audio producer has a heart for this baby]. He decided to put two 500GB 7200rpm drives and 4GB of memory.... as a result, this single-core computer is simply flying and will happily serve for years to come... as a kitchen computer.

But upgrades work. Now, to go for a single SSD or a 500 gig notebook drive... that is the question.

Michael, these drives are definitely not as fast as some other SSDs but they are very midmarket friendly. They are priced around where the standard 7200RPM drives are and because of that they may have a chance to influence those who would like to get one of these into their laptop as they already come with the necessary software and hardware to upgrade(desktops). I like the idea that they bring value and simplicity to the SSD market.

Well, I might stay with 15K.6 SAS at 110-172 MB/s.

SNV125-S2BD/128GB is $237.98. 3 year warranty. I might get a pair of them. The 146GB SAS 15K.6 drives are $242.
