Happy 10th Birthday Sims!

2/5/2010 by: Daniela Kustre - Get more from this author

Incredible how it may sound, but besides Facebook, there was a social game that captured the hearts and minds of millions of people worldwide. On February 4th, 2000 - EA launched The Sims. A whole decade has passed and The Sims are still with us.

There isn't much new that we can say about The Sims. This is one of the most popular games of all time, giving players a chance to lead and live virtual lives through their Sims characters. The game eventually turned into a franchise resulting in several sequels [The Sims, The Sims 2, The Sims 3] with numerous spin-offs and mission packs. You can find The Sims franchise title in 60 different countries and in 22 languages. To prove that games are very serious business, you might like to know that the title brought a cool $2.5 billion profit - that's right, profit - not even overall revenue. Given that the total investment EA made in The Sims franchise was less than $100 million, a 2.5 billion profit enabled a creation of many new titles. It is also worth noting that the franchise is extremely popular due to its multi-platform orientation - you can play The Sims on different platforms like PC's, Macs, all sorts of game consoles, and of course, smartphones.

The Sims are also very popular because they are constantly evolving, going forward and using everything available in the industry to stay that way. In social-networking circles they have their own pages on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and YouTube, creating a set of roughly one million followers.

The latest title in the series, The Sims 3 brought environmental friendliness as it gave the players possibilities to grow their own food and to use hybrid cars (Toyota Prius) to travel inside the game.

For this birthday they are giving away some free gifts and promotions to their players and to Sims fans on their Sims Web site.
