Corsair today announced the launch of their high-density DDR3-1600 24GB and 16GB DDR3 memory kits. The 24GB Kit runs at 1600 MHz with CAS9 timings, meaning that these modules are not only dense, but they are capable of still delivering good speeds with reasonable timings.

The 24GB Kit requires that all DIMM slots be populated meaning that this will be a 6 x 4GB module configuration. This would effectively max out most users’ motherboards as almost all X58 motherboards are limited to 24GB of system memory. Before purchasing this, we highly recommend you check with your motherboard manufacturer to be sure the board supports 24GB as some unfortunately – did not pass qualification with 4GB modules in each DIMM slot. We heard some comments from users that there were issues, especially on motherboards whose makers did not pay attention to properly powering the memory slots. If you purchased a X58-based motherboard from a top tier manufacturer, you should be good.

Corsair’s 24GB Dominator DDR3 memory kit has been rigorously qualified and tested in platforms based on the Intel X58 chipset. Corsair claims that this kit is designed for use with triple-channel Core i7 CPUs such as the i7 980X sexa-core processor. From our experience, this memory would work really well in environments like the EVGA SR-2 which is a dual socket system which would thrive on the ability of having the full 48GB and even possibly run it beyond the DDR3-1333 that the board normally runs memory at. In SR-2, this 24GB kit at DDR3-1600 would return overall system bandwidth of massive 76.8 GB/s, i.e. some record memory scores would definitely fall.

On the other hand, the 16GB Dominator DDR3 memory kit is designed for use on dual channel platforms based on the P55 chipset, AMD chipsets and the like. Both of these kits use Corsair’s DHX+ cooling solution and also come with cooling fans. In addition to this, these modules will actually be blue contrary to all of their other Dominator kits available on their site which are all red.

“We continue to see increasing demand for high density solutions from programmers, scientists, videographers, and other data-intensive users,” stated John Beekley, VP of Technical Marketing at Corsair. “These new 1600MHz modules will enable a new level of processing speed for handling these large data sets.”

Both the 16GB and 24GB kits are available direct from Corsair at their store and go for $999 for the 16GB and $1449 for the 24GB. The prices are steep, but it is good to see these high-capacity modules coming down in price. When Kingston launched its 12GB DDR3-1600 memory kit several moons ago, the price was set at $1499 for 12GB, not for 24GB. It is good to see such a positive development, as system memory is coming down in price, even for highest-quality modules such as these.
