The newly announced enterprise RealSSD P300
drive is likely to be considered the performance king of non-RAID SSDs. Meaning that it is the fastest drive when not comparing against the RAID and PCIe based solutions. This drive utilizes the SATA 6G interface allowing it more bandwidth than almost any SSD before, with the exception of the other [C300] Micron based controller drives.
Getting to the actual specifications only increases the excitement of this announcement. The P300 drive will run on SLC NAND memory and operate at sequential read speeds of up to 360 MB/s and write speeds of upto 275 MB/s. In addition to this it will offer up to 60K IOPs read and a 45K random write IOPs on 4KB files which they claim to be the highest of any SATA-based SSD on the market as it’s likely that companies like FusionIO have them beat with their PCIe based solutions. In addition to that, these drives will be offered in 50GB, 100GB, and 200GB sizes which will offer different price points based on an enterprise’s needs. In addition to that, read and write speeds are not affected by the size of the drives as some other SSD controllers may be.
Hopefully, in the future we’ll have a chance to compare these drives directly to the enterprise SSDs being offered from companies like Seagate with their Pulsar SSD and maybe even OCZ with their drives as well. The only thing is that we’re a bit curious about price and we don’t expect it to be cheap. We have contacted Micron regarding the price and hope to get a response soon.
