GlobalFoundries Moving Into World's Biggest Wafer

What to do if you're working hard on becoming world's largest foundry? Have an headquarter that looks like your core business. While the Ferrari's facilities look from the distance like a race car, GlobalFoundries is getting ready to do "one up" on the rest of the silicon industry.

According to this story, first ATIC leased 6,840 m2 [73,600 sq. ft.] i.e. two and half floors of the building, as a part of multi-year build up of GlobalFoundries in the Abu Dhabi region. Then Geoff Akiki, General Manager for Abu Dhabi Cluster at GlobalFoundries made the followng statement: "We're pleased to formalize this relationship with Aldar and look forward to moving into our new home at HQ. Innovative in design, this facility will provide us with services we need to support a growing operation as we expand our regional footprint and scale our presence in Abu Dhabi."

Abu Dhabi's "Wafer" - New home for GlobalFoundries Abu Dhabi and ATICThe company is going to become a tenant at a building simply called "HQ" in Al Raha Beach, Abu Dhabi. Al Raha Beach is a $14.7 billion development called the "ultimate water-front city", created by reclaiming the land from the sea and creating a majestic skyline. The building is being built by Aldar, the government-owned investment arm that specializes in real estate development, but also owns a share in Daimler AG, the parent company of brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Maybach and Freightliner.

As you can see on the image to the right, HQ is. figuratively speaking, the world's largest wafer and looks like a combination between a silicon wafer and a Stargate from the popular TV series.

The building should be 23 stories and measure in at 400ft [121m] tall. This follows in the grand tradition of building majestic structures on the coasts of the famed UAE. We hope that they hold an event there soon so the press can get a look inside.
