Freecom, a Mitsubishi Kagaku Media company, unveiled today a new 2.5-inch external hard drive that's a world-first in ways more than one. In addition to the fact that the Mobile Drive MG is the first external USB 3.0 hard drive, it's also definitely the thinnest on the market, measuring just 10 millimeter in depth.
The 320GB fanless external storage is USB powered so it doesn't need a power cable. The device is fitted inside the environmentally-friendly white magnesium casing with a silver color band designed with Mac users in mind. It should theoretically support other operating systems because it comes with both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports, with the latter enabling transfer speeds up to 130 megabytes per second, which is significantly faster than traditional USB 2.0 connection.
Of course, Mac users won't be able to take advantage of the speedy interface because Apple's computer doesn't yet support USB 3.0. The 320GB Mobile Drive Mg will only be available through Apple Premium Resellers, priced at just $90, Freecom said.
The drive will come in three different models, all of which color-match MacBooks and include a two-year warranty. The other two models top out at 750GB model and are 15 millimeter thick. The only difference between them is a FireWire 800 interface. The 750GB Mobile Drive Mg with FireWire 800 costs $170 ($40 less if you don't need FireWire).
