ARM and GlobalFoundries continues to collaborate on an optimized system-on-chip (SoC) solution for the ARM Cortex-A series processor designs. They are combining ARM Artisan advanced physical IP
and GlobalFoundries’ 28nm process technology
. The first test chip based on the dual-core processor is operating at frequencies greater than 2.5GHz in the Dresden Fab.
Their Technology Qualification Vehicle (TQV) allows GlobalFoundries to develop process technology that is specifically optimized for Cortex-A series processors. Mojy Chian, senior vice president of design enablement of GlobalFoundries said "TQVstrategy developed with ARM is paying dividends in our 32/28nm HKMG technology by delivering impressive performance and energy-efficiency."
This solution is more than a standard test chip. Each TQV is designed to emulate a full specification SoC.
Furthermore, ARM’s executive vice president and general manager, physical IP division, Simon Segars, said "It serves as a foundation for next-generation mobile and high-end consumer devices using 20nm process technology."
The design and manufacturing involved in 20nm technology is becoming more complex. The partnership is intended to help chip designers face the challenge, as well as reduce time to volume production.
Performance is expected to increase on GlobalFoundries’ 28nm High Performance Plus (HPP) platform which is chosen for wired networking applications, with extremely low active power and an operating point of 0.85V.
