On Paris Air Show 2011
, which is being held from June 20-26 at the Le Bourges airport
, avionics supplier Thales introduced their vision of cockpit of the future. Planned for introduction in 2020-2025, the concept bears resemblance cockpits used in the popular Star Trek franchise
.Thales Odicis Cockpit Vision for introduction to business, commercial and military aircrafts in 2020-2025 timeframe
The company is showing unified multi-touch screen which replaces up to nine separate displays we came to know in the aircrafts of today. Thales is arguing that with advancements from current 3D and early-stage 4D navigation, pilots are getting overburdened by the legacy way of controlling the working aspects of the aircraft. According to Thales, "current generation cockpits will fail to deliver the increased volume of data in any accessible manner."
In order to address that, the Odicis concept features afore mentioned large scale unibody flexible AMOLED or OLED screen which features very high resolution and powerful graphics power in the background. Even though Thales is saying that this concept would launch in 9-16 years from now, even the graphics hardware of today such as FirePro V9800 or Quadro 6000 would handle this resolution at ease.Cockpit of Shuttle stored in USS Enteprise NX-01 (Star Trek: Enterprise series). Comparing the images of Star Trek shuttle cockpit and the Odicis vision, there is only one question in our minds... why wait for 23rd century? We hope that this cockpit will become a reality.
