The Internet has shown what will happen if the US Congress passes their lousy bills to control the Internet.
Some of the sites that have closed down for 12 to 24 hours are: Wikipedia, Craigslist, Reddit, Wordpress, and Google is also protesting. Representative Lamar Smith
(Republican, 21st District of Texas) is working for the Recording Industry Association of America
(RIAA) and other big businesses to take control of the Internet with censorship.
I was reminded of a poem by Martin Niemoeller
, which my mother had memorized:“When the Nazis came for the communists, I remained silent; I was not a communist. When they locked up the social democrats, I remained silent; I was not a social democrat. When they came for the trade unionists, I did not speak out; I was not a trade unionist. When they came for the Jews, I remained silent; I wasn't a Jew. When they came for me, there was no one left to speak out.”
Not speaking out for what you believe in is not a crime. It is something that each person has to decide to do, or not do.
Yes, the White House has come out with a statement against Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), the PROTECT IP Act and the Online Protection and Digital ENforcement Act
(OPEN). Some publications say that there is no reason to do any more because the President's Spokesperson has indicated they oppose the legislation. But does that mean when push-comes-to-shove President Barack Obama will veto the legislation. He has very few vetoes since he was elected in 2008.
Does that mean the citizens of the United States should not call their elected representative. I say NO, call your representatives!
Flood the Washington DC switchboards with your personal opinions on this legislation. Many of us were there when the American society took to the streets to protest the Vietnam War … Congress woke up and acted as a representative body and gradually stopped that war.
Call your Congressperson and Senator – NOW -and add your voice in protest. Otherwise, we will eventually not be living in a free society.
There is a need for legislation to combat cybercrime, but first, we need to review and vigorously enforce existing laws. If they are out of date, then they should b amended to reflect the changing times. We must not allow the monetary interests of a few corporations to undermine the free flow of information on the Internet. Yes, there are things I personally despise that are on the Internet. However, if we narrow the focus of information to our parochialism of using only a few sources, then we might miss an idea that will help a member of our family or our community.
Reddit is down as well
