Following the end of the Bethesda-Interplay Fallout court saga, we were left wondering what the Interplay Entertainment will do next. Now, the announcement came that the Black Isle Studios, organization that gave birth to Obsidian Entertainment and Troika Games.
There's no doubt that the Black Isle Studios used to be one of most influential game studios. In late 1990s, the company logo was featured in front of successful franchises such as Baldur's Gate, Fallout, Icewind Dale, Planescape Torment, Lionheart, Dark Alliance, Stonekeep and more.
In the announcement today, the company announced the return of Black Isle Studios with veterans such as Christopher "Chris" Taylor (not to be confused with Chris Taylor of Gas Powered Games fame) leading the team. For those not in the know, Chris Taylor is the co-creator and designer of the Fallout franchise. His last game carried the codename 'Project V13' (Fallout Online) and unfortunately, will never see the light of day.
With the end of the long legal saga which saw Interplay ceding all control of the Fallout / Fallout MMO (Project V13) franchise to Bethesda Softworks - Herve Caen, Interplay's CEO decided to resurrect Black Isle Studios. As Interplay experienced tough times, going bankrupt in the early 2000s, Black Isle Studios ended with Interplay laying off all of its employees… until 2012.
Today's announcement marks the return of Interplay and Black Isle Studios to their former glory, with the company still owning the rights to non-D&D titles such as Dark Alliance, Descent: Freespace, Lionheart or Stonekeep. While Interplay does have a lot of franchises owned, the logic would dictate that the Black Isle Studios would focus on role-play titles.
Only time will tell when the Black Isle Studios / Interplay will announce their first title, but it is certain that Interplay is trying to use the available resources to extract the best possible outcome. We would hedge the bests that we'll see a new Dark Alliance or Stonekeep, but there are other possibilities as well.
