Hot on the heels of yesterday's USB 3.0 update
, Kingston has made a few announcements regarding their latest generation of USB 3.0 devices. Kingston's new announcements center around two of their already existing USB 3.0 product lines, however, these devices are getting both a speed and capacity boost.Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 G3 32GB - Fastest USB 3.0 drive to date?
The first product, the DataTraveler HyperX Predator is the same USB drive that we reviewed before; however, it is an updated version of that drive. We can say that without a doubt, this is the fastest USB drive we have ever owned.
The second product is an updated version of their DataTraveler Ultimate series, which we also reviewed. This is the third generation of the DataTraveler Ultimate series of USB 3.0 drives and is more of their performance offering when it comes to USB 3.0 but isn't quite the fastest nor mainstream. The Ultimate series of USB drives deliver great performance at a very reasonable price. Kingston's announcement includes the new speeds of the DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 to 150 MB/s read and 70 MB/s write. The predecessor to this drive, the G2 was rated at speeds of 100 MB/s read and 70 MB/s write, but actually performed at 125 MB/s read and 74 MB/s write. The 32GB variant of that drive that we tested was $85 at that time, so we expect the 32GB and 64GB versions of this drive to be similarly priced, possibly lower. That's right, 1TB. One TeraByte. And it's a USB 3.0 stick.
The new HyperX Predator is getting a speed upgrade to a rated speed of 240 MB/s read and 160 MB/s write. The one interesting thing, though, is that Kingston underrates their speeds, so we have a feeling that the real performance of this drive will be well beyond 240 MB/s. In addition to that, Kingston has increased the capacity to 512GB and 1TB from a minimum of 32GB to 256GB. The price is still unannounced, but we can easily expect the 1TB USB drive to sell for over $1,000. So, at this point, we can only speculate but based on prior prices, we don't see it being far off.
Surprisingly for a Kingston announcement, neither of the products announced today actually had their prices stated, however, we can fairly accurately estimate the prices based on the past versions of these products. As we learn more about the pricing and get these in our hands we'll be sure to let you know more.
