In what is hopefully a sign of things to come, the users behind Dogecoin have decided to work on a project to raise money for the Jamaican National Bobsled Team. This campaign started immediately after the Jamaican National Bobsled Team qualified for the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia
this year. After they qualified for the two-man bobsled competition, users of Dogecoin banded together to start gathering up money to donate it to the JOA (Jamaican Olympic Association). The JOA is responsible for sending the Jamaican National Bobsled Team to Sochi from their training facilities in Wyoming. They first competed in the bobsled event back in the 1988 Winter Olympics which was later turned into a movie that many across the world know as the movie 'Cool Runnings'. They also partook in the same event in 1992, 1994, 1998 and 2002 but have since missed the last two Winter Olympics.
The users of Dogecoin have currently raised over $31,121.72 via their Dogesled campaign
via the Dogecoin Foundation
which is currently nearing 1 million Dogecoins donated. What is also helping the value of this campaign is the sudden jump in Dogecoin's value
, which has soared through the roof in the last few days and saw its biggest jump last night. Right now there are more people mining Dogecoin than ever before and the value of Dogecoin is going up at a very rapid pace. While I'm not sure if all of the attention associated with the Dogesled campaign is propping up this 'coin' I do suspect that a bit of good publicity about Dogecoin is helping non-minings be aware of its existence (like Bitcoin). Surely, the entire internet is going to be full of references to Dogecoin and the Dogecoin Subreddit where most of the Dogecoin talk goes on.
But let's not forget that Dogecoin recently had a pretty big 'heist' of sorts where millions of Dogecoins were lost
and now those Dogecoins are worth a lot more than they were when they were stolen. 20-30 million Dogecoins at today's value is worth around $23,000 - $35,000 up from about $12,000 when we originally reported on the article. It is really good to see that cryptocoins are being used for good and are helping erase some of the bag stigma created for them by the media and certain Bitcoin markets like the Silk Road. Also, there is an IndieGogo campaign
that is seeking to also raise money for the Jamaican National Bobsled Team to go to Sochi, which has already raised $9,378 on its own and is looking to raise $80,000. You can buy a $50 to help them raise the money and between this (official?) campaign and the Dogecoin campaign, they are already 50% of the way towards their $80,000 goal.
