NVIDIA Partners claim GT200 still in Mass Production
10/12/2009 by: Sean Kalinich
News of the demise of the GTX 260, 275 and 285 due to shortage might be overrated - or actually limited to a specific market from where rumors arrive. Today I read this information and thought about the reasons for this to be happening. The first was that it could be a premature end of life cycle [EOL]. The next was that NVIDIA might be pulling out all the stops to get Fermi supplies very high to meet any demands that could happen over the holidays. The third was that it was again incorrect information.
We took the time to contact a few NVIDIA partners and ask them publicly and also to check with our sources to see if there is any truth to the rumor. We were surprised that we received a reply in a little less than five minutes after we sent the e-mails. Across the board, from both the public and the inside sources they all claim the rumor is untrue.
They all say that the GT200 parts are in mass production, with internal refreshes coming up soon from a few of them. This would seem to be the opposite of a part famine. We are continuing to reach out to our sources to see if we can find the source of the rumor and if there is any chance of there being truth behind this.
One possibility that we stumbled upon is that this is a regional issue. When we checked we did find that some EU partners were claiming that they were not getting any allocation due to all of the available parts getting earmarked for the US. This was not true with all of the partners we talked to just a couple. All of the US Partners we talked to said they did not have any allocation issues as of this writing.
At the time of this writing we have not contacted nVidia about this as you can pretty much guess their answer. Once we have heard back from all of our sources on this we will take the time to talk to them about it and see what they have to say. Until then hang tight, you might still be able to get a GTX 2xx card for a while yet.
