AMD's Opteron 8000 Deal: Buy Three, get One free
11/24/2009 by: Theo Valich

In a bid to prepare the distributors for the 1Q 2010 arrival of Maranello platform and Magny-Cours processors, AMD moved to silently clear the stock of existing AMD Opteron 8000 Series multi-socket processors.

In an invite, AMD is clearing following processors on a principle "buy three get one free" and the company isn't even segmenting the number of units - clearing the inventory is a standard business practice, while AMD definitely wants to clear the remaining multi-socket stock.

The interesting bit is that the company didn't announce same "clearance Clarence" for single- and dual-socket Opterons [1000, 2000 series] meaning these units sell in volume and there is no need to clear the stock with a special action for the distributors. The only thing required is that you have a signed distributors' agreement with AMD and the deal has to close with processors shipping prior to last day of December 2009.

Given AMD's recent Opteron sales results, we're not surprised to see such a sale taking place. It will be interesting to see how much inventory AMD managed to clear, even though luck for this action is the fact that Intel didn't launch its multi-socket Nehalem-EX processors when it was originally planned but rather pushed back until the first half of 2010.
