NCSoft's unique and most importantly casual friendly MMO has hit the jackpot with a new addition to its content. One of them being players' gleefully awaited mission editor, named Architect has arrived. Announced by devs for Issue 13 it suffered a delay and finally came to us now with Issue 14.
Once inside the game players can find it in newly emerged Architect Entertainment facilities that are now in every street and corner of Paragon City and Rogue Isles. Upon logging into your character, a game tip pops out showing some hairless guy who has all the information you need to learn to be able to make your own missions.
Hundreds of user-created missions appeared in mere day or so after the Architect add-on became available.
While City of Heroes/Villains [CoX] is a great game with an insane character creation tool and a crazy amount of possible alts it suffers from one problem - the same thing that makes it so good. Some might say that CoX is a boring or a grindy game. However, it has quite a good amount of stories and missions and generally cool stuff to do. The issue that causes boredom is constant need for alting, creation of new characters with which you do not really feel like leveling from level 1 – 50 all again. Some resist the lure of altoholism for a while but in the end - it gets everybody. The options are just too many and even if you have ten characters you will break in the end consider making few more. This is where the beauty of the mission creator comes in to play.

It allows those with good (or bad ideas) to bring them out into the game for pleasure or pain of those willing to try them out. The best part is that even though the editor has been out for a day or so, there are already literally numerous new missions. It is a feature that has sparked new life into this MMO; while being unique on the market, CoX slowly started to lose its shine. Now thanks to editor you do not have to bother with repeating all those old boring missions or new ones that do not really fit your style (time-traveling Nazis involved with alien hybrid Romans I am looking at you).
In this user-created mission... you have to kill a PlayStation 3 and beat two guys that wanted to play it.
Since the Architect editor came out I have slain Blacula (yep the one from blaxploitation movies), defeated psychotic nerd mastermind and his army of fembot cheerleaders, replayed first episode of Duke Nukem 3D, fought vampire ravers, Amazon cannibals, stopped zombie, demon and alien invasions and much more.
If you succeed in your mission of destroying a console, boss appears: the mission author wants a revenge over the death of his Playstation 3 console...
There were of course some stinkers and currently you can only have three published missions at the same time but the important thing is that Jack is out of the box, the wheel is turning, and the game is alive again. Not just this game but the whole MMO industry because giving online players ability to create their own missions with their own stories and custom enemies is no less than epic move from NCsoft. This just might be one of those features that repeatedly gets copied by competing titles.
Once again the online game that has no "epic" loot or tricks to steal your time like expensive mounts and long travel times sticks it up to the so called "big fishes" of the MMO industry by giving players something that is actually fun. Not another grind, rank or similar idiocy, but hours of pure FUN.
