The sequel to Valve's best selling multiplayer survival horror game Left 4 Dead, appropriately named L4D2 is coming to us on Xbox 360 and PC. L4D2 promises to set a new benchmark for cooperative titles and become one of 2009's most prominent titles. It is set for release on November 17, 2009, a year after the fantastic debut of the first game of what is looking to be a franchise title.
According to Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve, a large part of Left 4 Dead's status as one of the 2008's top selling games was custom-tailored gameplay made possible by its AI Director. The team that is developing L4D2 plans to use the knowledge gained from Left 4 Dead to create a even better multiplayer co-operative game survival horror game.
LF4D2 will feature new AI Director 2.0 to produce dynamic gameplay that will take the game to the new level. Director will now be able to change weather effects, world objects and pathways. It will also be able to recognize player performance and adapt by changing the number of enemies and sound effects. If executed properly this should create a unique and challenging experience every time the game is played. If done badly we will face similar idiocy like the one seen in Oblivion's enemies scaled to player level flop. Such attempts are a fine line from success to failure.
With more co-operative campaigns, more Versus campaigns and maps for Survival mode available at launch Left 4 Dead 2 will be a much larger game. It will feature new Survivors, boss zombies, items and weapons like chainsaw, frying pan, baseball bat and more. Valve plans to start L4D2 with an even more aggressive advertising campaign than the previous game's one. The game will be launched worldwide with a multi-million dollar marketing campaign across TV, Outdoor, and Online.
I personally loathe such a huge focus on the advertising aspect of a game and prefer to see those millions spent on actual game quality but knowing Valve there is little doubt that they can do both parts right.
