Successor to AMD's Radeon HD 5970 is... HD 6990

During this year's Financial Analyst Day, AMD revealed the names for Cayman and Antilles, as well as introduced Turks and Caicos, the two remaining members of Northern Islands GPU Family [all set to launch within the next 100 days].
On the slide listed above, you can clearly see that Cayman, successor of Cypress [HD 5800 Series] is going to arrive on market as AMD Radeon HD 6950 and HD 6970. Given the history of the company, these two will be joined by HD 6930 as an OEM and low-volume retail part made from the GPUs that failed to "make the grade" [just like AMD Radeon HD 5830, GeForce GTX 465 and so on].
The successor of Hemlock [dual Cypress GPU] Radeon HD 5970 is currently known under codename "Antilles" [dual Cayman GPU]. When it arrives on market in first quarter of 2011, the board will receive the name AMD Radeon HD 6990.
When it comes to specifications, AMD Cayman should arrive on the market featuring 1536 cores and 2GB of GDDR5 memory, while Antilles packs 3072 cores and according to our sources, "only" 2GB of GDDR5 memory [to keep in compliance with 32-bit operating systems].
AMD also unveiled the successor of ATI Radeon HD 5700 series [Juniper GPU], currently known as Turks. Turks will arrive on the market known as Radeon HD 6700 Series, offering even greater price/performance ratio. Also, Caicos is en route, succeeding the popular Redwood GPU [HD 5600 Series]. We suspect the product will arrive on market as Radeon HD 6600 Series, but you should not expect to see a Radeon HD 666[0], rather as HD 6650 and HD 6670.
